My 4x4 Screw gets around 19 to 21 mpgs on the highway, same as what 2wd Screw owners are reporting.

If i need 4WD once a year, i'd say it was worth it. Like someone else said, I'd rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

I wouldn't even consider owning a 4x2 up here in the northeast. I like venturing off road too much, and in the winter a lot of times the roads aren't even plowed when I leave for work at 4:30 am.

true, I was thinking about that, but it's not a huge difference. hardly big enough to matter to me or most people.

if I like my truck (or somewhat need it, in the 4x4 case), I will have it no matter the cost, unless it's that expensive I can't reasonably afford it (chances of that?? lol).

any realistic savings or advantages of 2wd are small compared to what i'd get with a 4wd.

and just to point it out, i'd say almost all current generation f-150s around here are 4x4s. you barely ever see fx2s here, and most of the other 4x2s are STXs. not joking, at any given time at a local ford dealer, 1,2, MAYBE 3 f-150s on the lot are 2wd.

NL hills + NL winters + RWD, especially with barely any weight on the drive wheels, = bad idea. that's my reasoning, i'd rather pay more for gas than slip and slide around and possibly crash into a building, other vehicle, a ditch, a harbour....sorry, that's my reasoning for me personally.

plus, 4x4 sounds more impressive .

if you don't want and really don't need a 4x4, then don't get one. but i'd rather have it if needed.

Park nose down in the grass. Try to back it out the next morning with dew all over the grass. Then you'll be glad you have 4X4.

I bought a FX2 SCREW over a 4x4 SCREW for the little bit of MPG and the cost savings up front. To go to a 4x4 for the same money I'd have to give up the nice stuff the wife wanted (why wont they do heated seats in a cloth interior?). It's going to be used as a big car and possibly a tow vehicle down the line. I wouldnt have bought a 2WD if I didnt have a 96 Bronco 4WD.

The Fx2 is bouncy in the back and I'll guess softer up front than a 4x4, I would not assume it has a better overall ride than 4x4.

You have to get what works for you. For me, I wouldn't trade the 4x4 for anything. I've seen too many people with 2wd think "oh yeah I got this" and proceed to gvet stuck or run off the road. On the other hand, there are those out tbhere who say the same thing with 4x4 or AWD and get overconfident and end up in the ditch right next to the 2wd.

Bottom line, will you get better mpg with a 4x2? Yes, that is undisputed. But for me, the 0.4-0.8mpg difference is no even trade for fun and peace of mind.

Correct, the only place where 2x4 gets better mileage is strictly stop and go city driving where there is 400-500# less "stuff" to accelerate. On the highway the extra 400-500# of "stuff" makes little difference as the wind resistance becomes the deciding factor above 60mph. Same reason the Eco boost and 5.0L get damn near the same mileage at 70mph and above, the wind resistance is same and far out weighs engine drag from the extra 2 cylinders on the 5.0L

I've only owned 4wd trucks and this is my first 2wd. I haven't used 4wd in 4-5 years. I just saw no reason in spending the money on it and I don't regret it. It's still almost as tall as a 4wd, rides the same, and gets about the same mileage (which is surprising because its a few hundred pounds lighter).

Sounds like your skirt might be getting in the way while you try to get into your 4x4.
