3.31 or 3.55 rear end
#11
I have 3.31s in mine and my computer hangs around 17.9 MPG all the time. I do a lot of around town driving though during the week.
If I reset it on some back roads with no stop lights; etc and a 55 MPH speed limit the computer stays around 23.7 MPG

I have EB Screw 4X4 with 3.31. My current average on the B trip odo is 17.8. This last trip I took (over 1K miles) with weather & headwinds averaged 18 mpg at between 65-75 mph from E. TN. to Northern Indiana and back. I have a travel trailer that weighs in about 6K pounds loaded out that it pulls without any problems. I'm not too concerned about having a locking rear end since the TC takes care of slip issues with my type of driving (95% commuting). Thus far, I am happy with the set up.

The conversation on this topic is exactly what I'm looking for but I need it in reference to v8 5.0. Would someone please advise me for 5.0? I have a 4.2 xl 2001 4x4 that is too week to tow a 1000lb trailer from Denver up into to the mountains. The most towing I ever do is a pallet of bricks. 70% highway miles at elevation no load. Shopping for 4x2 5.0 xl 6.5 bed 2017 / 2018. Thanks.

If you are looking at the 2017 5.0 get the 6sp/3.73 rear end. I have a 2015 and
it is the best combination.
If you are looking at the 2018 5.0 get the 10sp/3.31 rear end, as the 1st and second gear will be equivalent to the 6sp/3.73..... it will be way more for what you need. Unless you are planning to get a lift and huge tires, or tow to max capacity, you dont need the 10sp/3.73...

mountains? eco is a far better choice. but even the 5.0 will be a huge improvement over what u have. in mountains a 5.0 would really benefit from 3.73 gears - it will have to rev to get the power. an eco would rev far lower and fly up those hills.

With the 10 speed trans, a low rear end (higher number) is almost irrelevant.

With the 5.0, isn't the top gear or the 10 speed even more of an o/d than the top gear of the 6 speed? I know that in my 6 speed with the 3.55s going up the mountains at high altitude even on a mild grade, it will drop to 5th or even 4th at times....can't imagine how bad it would be with 3.31 and the 10 speed - it probably wouldn't be able to use the top 4 or 5 gears.
Mountains and altitude are way different than level terrain or rolling hills below 2000' elevation.
