Default 2012 f150 302 ci starter

how do you remove it? The top bolt seems impossible to reach, regardless of extensions and universal flex joints. Extremely tight fit. 2012 F150 4x2

Oh, Hey everyone. Didn't realize I was posting to a thread. I thought I had one of those instant mechanics on the line that was going to solve all my problems instantly:-)

Any help on the above matter is greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
G

Just looked it up in the shop manual, it looks very similar to the 4.6 starter mounting in relation to it's bolts, never changed one on our engines but I have cussed many a 4.6.

All I can tell ya is your going to need a very long extension and go in front of the engine mounts all the way back to get that top bolt out.

Much appreciated Rnlcomp for looking it up. I'll keep trying but I'm really starting to fade on this. Seems unreachable and I haven't found any info on changing out the starter on a 5.0L...which is starting to make me very nervous:-0

Diagram above is the 5.0. The one thing that sticks out in my mind about that hidden bolt (when dealing with the 4.6) is it never got put back in. The other 2 bolts are sufficient to hold it in place.

That bolt is a pain, I always got it with a Matco 6" 1/4" drive flex head ratchet, a short socket and sometimes a 1" extension to give me more to hold on to. It's a very tight fit, but I always got them out and got them back in. I also add a couple dabs of anti-seize to make things nicer for the next guy.

I was thinking the same thing about leaving the top bolt out, then I saw the other post about being able to get them out AND back in, so there's hope...which is all I need right now. Going to take another crack at it...will update.

Thanks for the advice and hope! Going at it again with the ratchet combo you suggested. Will update.

Default Done...almost.

Great advice from both commentors. Yes, it's tight and in my case, one bolt was a real problem. Broke off while coming out. Seemed excessively hard to work out, and still can't explain why it broke, but it did. It's still stuck in the housing. Tight space for big vice grips and small grips don't bite enough. Managed one full (maybe) turn with heat, liquid wrench, and grips. Gave up tonight, but will be back at it tomorrow. Any advise, as always, greatly appreciated.

Having that bolt break off is really unusual, I'm sorry you're stuck dealing with this. There are a couple different methods you can use for removal that require different tools and various levels of effort, do you have access to a welder?
