They are now removing the plastic shields and updating the PCM with what has been described as a better tune.
To the OP: I try not to use my truck for short trips, but use a winter beater instead. Or you could add a joy ride to your short trips, but don't let it idle a lot like New Englanders tend to do. I start it up and drive it so it warms up faster and doesn't get zero mpg for 15 minutes.

Ya, I'll try and do this whenever I can. Up until now I was driving a Jeep, and it seemed to be OK with short trips. Can I be fairly certain that the cause of the failed cat is from doing short trips in the winter? It just has me a bit worried as I just bought this truck and, for the most part, do short trips less than 5km (I live in a small town). Do I need to be worried about the catalytic convertors failing on a regular occasion? Or is this failed cat a random worst case scenario sort of thing?
