Default 2011 F150 4x4 5.0 Engine Knock

I need some help with my 2011 F150 XLT 4x4 Super Crew 5.0L. I have been experiencing a lower engine knock for awhile now. I first noticed this early on, and the dealer replaced the AC stretchy belt with idler pulley & belt (TSB 11-7-1). I had continued to notice the knocking for several thousand miles, and taken the truck back for this issue twice. The dealer said they didn’t hear anything, and that it sounded normal. I finally recorded video of the engine knocking at idle, and showed the dealer. Dealer stated they could hear it on the video, and was able to hear it in person. I was told a Ford engineer would have to get involved with my truck before anything else could be done. That was on 24MAR2014. It is now 8APR2014, and had to pay for an oil change so the dealer can cut the oil filter open to check for metal. Since no metal was found, the dealer doesn’t appear they want to help. The engine noise is still there! I emailed the video to the service manager so he could send it to the engineer. But that was after I suggested it. I have yet to hear from the Ford engineer. The problem is the noise is intermittent, and is a crap shoot as to when it happens.

FordService, I sent you a PM with my information & VIN#.

Here is the video of my truck. Build date is 30NOV2010 with over 47,000 miles.

I had a 2013 XLT with the same engine that made the same noise. I wound up trading it off, partly because I didn't like the noise, mostly because I wanted to get my wife a new vehicle. The dealer did the same thing (at my request), cut the filter open to look for metal shavings and charged me for the oil change. I always assumed it was some sort of piston slap noise, although I noticed it more when the engine was warm. Replied because I'm curious what, if anything, you find out. Good luck!

I was surprised to see several posts of 5.0L having this issue when doing a search on here. Hopefully this gets squared away, and I don't have to search for another truck. I like what I have, minus the KNOCK!

Hi.

Roger that, my good man. I very much hope Ford steps up as well. This is, by all indications, not that uncommon, as you have noted.

I meant to post another link earlier - this one:

Very best of luck to you!

I spoke with my Regional CSM yesterday in regards to my 5.0L. They had a tech, not an engineer listen to the video posted here. The tech stated it sounded "normal", and compared it to another 5.0L that sounded "normal". CSM said Ford will not do anything else with my 5.0L unless another issue presents it self. I asked what happens after I reach 60,000 miles, and the engine decides to take a dump. Is Ford going to cover it, if related to this problem. She offered me a 3yr/36,000 mile Ford ESP Extra Care with $100 deductible at no charge to me. Which I accepted, but really only gives me an additional 1yr/23,000 miles to my existing powertrain warranty. While I appreciate the effort. It still doesn't help identify the problem with my "normal" engine knock.

I had this same situation and my dealer had an engineer look at it. He said that the knock is caused by the fuel injectors and that it is louder than they expected when the engine was designed, but that it is perfectly fine and operating well. The reason he gave me was that there are more plastic parts that don't dampen noise as well as their replacements. Regardless, I am in the process of purchasing an extended warranty for my 2011 just in case they're lying to me.

I'm debating on extending the esp after the free one expires. I was planning on keeping this truck a long time like my last one. I had it for 10 yrs. now I just don't know.

Hi.

Good plan - because they fed you a line of freshly-squeezed BS.

Injectors make some noise - they always have - but they are not THAT noisey. And it's characterized by a distinct 'tick', not a 'knock'.

Plastic parts actually quiet down an engine a tad, as thermoplastic has sound dampening properties.

Review the links I provided earlier in this thread - that is your real culprit. Looks like Ford is not all that willing to admit this issue after all... for shame.

good luck
