2011 ecoboost noise on start up
#572
Attached is the TSB. Really doesn't cover anything that we haven't already discussed. Replace chain, when it fails again, replace chain again. The one item to note is that the emissions warranty will be covering the timing chain replacement. I just can't determine what length of time this warranty is. I think it might be 36,000mi. See page 17/22: http://www.ford.com/resources/ford/g...11Warranty.pdf

Should be under the 6/60 powertrain warranty. It specifically calls out the timing chain and all lubriacted parts.

Update October 15th 2014
Long story short... My truck doesn't qualify to have this fixed...
The technician at my local dealership spent a great deal of time with me today going through the issues with the truck and why it doesn't qualify for the TSB. He even showed me the timing variance on the computer and it's only 1/2 to 3/4 of a degree out at idle... Not the required 5+ to throw error code P0016 and get this fixed
So basically if you have this noise but no engine code.... Good Luck getting it fixed. In my case it's been recommended to file a complaint with Ford Canada against the selling dealership... DONE. Then they suggested I call and speak with the dealer principal... DONE. He seemed more receptive than anyone about my concerns with the truck and said his service dept or sales dept never informed him of my issues... Glad I could help him out there... We'll see what he comes back with.
They sold me the truck with problems. 1 degree variance or 5 degree variance my truck makes the damn noise, bad so let's fix it. I can't rely on this truck for what I bought it for when there is a high potential of imminent failure.

Did they check your timing when starting after a cold soak?

I'm still waiting to hear back from the selling dealer principal on the issue. He seemed to actually take me seriously.

I think this gets back to my post a few pages ago, run it until the CEL light is on and then they know something has to be fixed. It'll only be a matter of time until this happens. With my replacement chain, I'm just over a year of intermittent rattle, but it's getting worse now the morning temps are dropping. I'm just watching my warranty date and waiting for the light before I try to get it fixed again.

BC has some pretty remote country where help won't be coming fast or cheap and those are the places I like to take my truck... Reliability is without question my number one concern when owning/driving a vehicle.
I have another opportunity for an Elk hunt in about 3 weeks time. If this hasn't resolved itself by then, I won't be going on that one either. It's a 4000km round trip.
This is WHY I buy trucks.... I drive them like trucks. But being sold a vehicle with a pre-existing condition from a Ford dealer is a pretty tough pill for me to swallow. I think the selling dealer should be fixing my truck or taking this one back.

I think the issue with dealers is that if they believe there's any chance the manufacturer will deny their warranty claim/reimbursement for the parts and labor they put into it, they're not so inclined to say ok and go ahead and do it. They could be stuck eating the parts and labor themselves. That's my understanding. My dad was a Porsche mechanic and when I worked in that shop as a teen cleaning the shop, I remember them talking about how Porsche would ask for the warranty parts shipped back to them. I guess maybe they do spot check these claims from the dealers now and then to be sure they're not being taken to the cleaners for some reason. I don't know how all that works, but I do believe dealers are more cautious about doing warranty work even if there's a TSB and it seems likely to be the issue they're looking at....if they're afraid Ford won't pay them for the parts and labor. I think this timing chain replacement pays almost 9 hours. I assume if a mechanic can knock it out in 7 hours, the remaining 2 hours is free money in the pocket ;-) I think that's how it works (manufacturer pays the full labor amount no matter how long it really takes). So if you're the mechanic, you really don't want to be doing this job in 11 hours if it only pays 9.
