2011 ecoboost noise on start up

Seems to be VCT or VCT valve to me. It's not lasting 10's of minutes is it? If the noise stays there for some length of time worry a lot/some.

I don't recall ever seeing a clear explanation as to what the basic problem is, but my conclusion, rightly or wrongly is that there is some instability in startup due to oil flow/viscosity/seal leakage/chain looseness/or who knows what. The outcome is that the vane mechanism instead of immediately finding a stable orientation (timing) bangs back and forth for a second or so and then settles down. I am assuming the Ford valve timing positioner is similar to the Toyota one, and uses the vane device. Here is a good youtube video that explains how it works. Just imagine what that device would sound like if it was to bang back and forth in the allowed degree of rotation, instead of staying in a stationary specific position.
Or, perhaps the Ford issue is a totally different one...

This is a very long thread, and I have not read all the posts. Your engine noise sounds like a similar issue in some Toyota engines with variable valve timing. See this Toyota TSB to repair the issue. Essentially they are replacing the VVT vane positioner at the end of the camshaft.
