Interesting. I'm leaning towards just getting mine fixed. I would hate to have it leave me stranded somewhere once it finally does throw that code. I guess I could go trade it in, but I would probably just get a different ecoboost, and with the TSB saying clear out to 2015 whose to say it wouldn't happen again. (I cant afford a new one)
I drove a chevy for 3 years prior to buying the Ford and I can't imagine going back to one. The ecoboost tows so much better and has much better passing power while pulling the boat. It just sucks that they seem to be pretty problematic.

I guess I should've worded that differently. They seem to have more issues then naturally aspirated engines. Between everyone having misfire problems from condensation, fuel dilution in the oil, coking problems with no approved cleaning method, timing chain stretch, ignition cools, the list goes on. Don't get me wrong I love my truck and I'm sure there are a lot of people that haven't had any of these problems, but it sure seems like they have more issues than a lot of other trucks out there.

My co-worker has a Dodge Ram 1500 and it seems like he has more problems than I do. He's had it in twice for transmission quirks now and another time for an instrument panel issue. Other than the timing chain/phaser issue which I have now had resolved for free under the TSB, my truck has rolled 53K totally trouble free miles. True the valves may be coking up in there, but that is an issue with GDI in general, not the Ecoboost in particular. I am considering a catch can to reduce this buildup and also have been in dialogue with CRC over whether their intake valve cleaner is truly safe for the Ecoboost/turbo combo. They seem adamant that it is since it simply dissolves the carbon instead of breaking it up into harmful particles. I may give that a go too. With two kids in college, I need to get many years out of mine and am very optimistic.

I dunno. I have usually located a model related internet forum for every vehicle I have owned. It's pretty typical that if you assume the relatively small population of owners that represent in these forum are actually a microcosm of the entire owner population (hundreds of thousands) the vehicles in question are to be avoided. The people in these forums are usually more "into" their vehicles however, have more technical knowledge and higher expectations. We are more prone to notice anomalies, and in short are usually much more OCD about everything. I know I am! That's how I found this place.

I guess I'm going to consider myself lucky.
My 2012 F-150 rolled over 130,000 miles this week on the way to work and I have never experienced the rattle on startup. I've ran my truck hard, had a tuner on it for over 100k miles of its life (87 octane tow tune). Truck hasn't given me one hint of trouble. I use it every day for work on/around surface coal mines so it has A LOT of idle time. I did have a drivers side manifold replaced under warranty because it warped at 80k miles and was whistling when it was cold. Other than that, nothing has been done besides routine maintenance, and probably a bit excessive to some. Only thing I've done to the truck is as follows.
I've flushed the transmission every 60k miles, pretty basic/routine. Drilled intercooler hole at 50k miles. Ran motorcraft synthetic blend with motorcraft filter up until it hit 60k miles. From 60k and beyond I switched to Amsoil XL oil with WIX filters. Every oil changed at 5,000 miles. New spark plugs every 30k miles, and new air filter (WIX) every 15k miles.
Truck has been great, and I have no complaints with the engine. I will say I was a bit reluctant when I bought the truck as I was looking for one with the V8. This truck I have now was the only one I was able to find in a 5 hour drive from home that had the options/color I wanted. I wouldn't hesitate a bit to buy another ecoboost engine. I think good routine maint. goes a long way with these engines.
A good friend of mine has 170k on his ecoboost, and another has 180k on his (most hwy, but still), and they haven't had anything besides plugs done to the engine and 5,000 mile oil changes.

I read that using full synthetic oil helped some people with the start up noise so I have been using it now. I'm on my 3rd oil change now and I haven't had a rattle since? I guess I'll just keep running it and see what happens. It's definitely an odd deal.

When I first bought my truck I noticed the rattle. I bought it from a GM dealership so I am sure they changed the oil with a "cheap" conventional type. I swapped it out to the Motocraft syn blend and have not heard it since.
