Also, service rep was kind of impressed with how I had a copy of the TSB they were going to use. lol. i told him "all from the forum" lol. People here seem to know more than most of those reps. Mechanic and rep told me this was the first ecoboost with this particular problem. HHHMMMM....

It was early in the morning and I told the mechanic not to touch the truck until tomorrow (which is today) and for him to go out there and start truck up. Sure enough today mechanic heard the rattling noise. They are going to repair it using that TSB/timing chain that is in this thread. I was ready to take my keys today if they were going to tell me no noise. I think it would be a good idea to speak with mechanic and give specific instructions on how to re-create this noise, if anyone here has that problem. Also, I lucked out because I had ESP plan that will cover it except for 100 dollar deductible. Let's see how it turns out. Oh and by the way about a two week duration on repair.
I asked my rep if this was what they were doing and he said no. But I think that's a lie

The rep probably doesn't even know how they are testing your truck. If your truck is making that noise every morning there is no reason it should not do it there.

Just checking back in... Had the full fix done in May, now that we are in 90+ degree days and the truck has had many overnight and several day heat soaks, still no rattle and I would have been having it every day in these conditions.

If you truck is still under warranty and you have any hint of a rattle, push push push to get the fix done before your warranty runs out.

Default 2011 Ecoboost startup noise

I have a 2011 F-150 extended cab, 4x4, XLT with just over 52,000 miles on it that I bought new in 2011. Four days ago, it started making the noise the first time I started it each day. Today, it also took it about a minute for the idle to smooth out.
Temps here have been in the high 80s to mid 90s.
It has never made these noises before. It has never idled like that before.
It will be a week before FORD has an opening to look at it.
The sound is just like what I heard in the first video. It only lasts 2-3 seconds, and then goes away. It only does it when the truck has been sitting for hours.
I bought the 5 year/100,000 mile warranty, and now have just a few months left on it.
I hope they can get it to replicate the sound quickly. I don't have a spare vehicle for them to keep mine for days or weeks.
I'll let y'all know what they find.

If you are short on time, then you can't waste any playing dealer games. Often the dealer will return the truck "unable to replicate complaint". That's because the started the truck, drove it into the service bay and then tried to listen for the noise. Force them to take the truck overnight, but you keep the keys. Go back the next day and meet the tech at the truck. You start while he's under the hood. He'll hear the noise and the repair should move forward. Demand the phasers get replaced. All 4!

Ford has a warranty on their repairs and they should give you a credit for misdiagnosing the problem. Of course they'll say those were other problems they had to fix. They always say that. They'll also tell you they've never heard of EB timing chain problems!

^^^ Spot on advice.

Most of the extended warranty plans also cover car rental costs, though they won't commit to the coverage until after they have verified the repair is covered by warranty, Catch-22.

Even if you potentially cover the rental car cost yourself, it will be well worth it to have the timing chain and phasers covered while the truck is still under warranty.

I'd even go as far as trying to bring the service advisor and service manager out to the lot for the overnight soak start... Let them all hear it so no disputes higher up the management chain.

I would also print out and have in your hand at the time of cold start the latest TSB on the chain/phaser rattle, links are earlier in this thread.

To go one step further, record the cold start with the tech and service white collars with your phone (all visible in the video) in case you have to push it further up the ladder with Ford corporate.

It's a shame that Ford doesn't make this process a bit more transparent. Owners shouldn't have to go through these complex 'let me prove it to you' processes, but it seems clear that Ford (and the dealers through fear of not being reimbursed by Ford) will not simply repair known faults that are sometimes difficult to reproduce or give the dealers themselves a precise process for reproducing the problems in the shop.
