If you have an audible rattle, they are supposed to do the tsb with phasers and timing chain. If you only have the check engine light with no rattle, they only do the timing chain. It's really stupid that it's written that way

I brought it in for the rattle and they couldn't re create it. Then the check engine light came on, lots if gas in the oil. So they changed just the timing chain.

They need to change the phasers.

Definitely. After reading up in this, it sounds like the phasers go bad, then the chain stretches.
Your fuel in oil is a completely different problem. These cam phaser problems were not addressed in eco motors until late 2015. So, anything built prior will have the issue at some point.

you really have to wonder if the long OCI and the fuel dilution is whats causing this to occur... I mean really you'd think Ford would have been able to have fixed VVTI since...

No issues with the Duratec 3.0/3.5 so WTF?

I believe its because of the direct injection that is causing premature wear on these timing components.

ALSO... even with the old 5.4 modular, I know many who haven't had phaser issues, if they methodically changed their oil (w/ synthetic) every 3500 miles.

Thumbs down Another Stretched Timing Chain...

I am going to throw my hat in the ring here for the same issues I got the truck with 53K km. It has 89k km now

-grinding on startup
-rough idles sometimes and also idles quite high/fast (both are random)
-no responsiveness/pick up. Can't really accelerate or pass anybody on the highway
-the same funny sound from the turbo when you do try and get something out of the truck. There are several YT videos on this. I believe it's a waste gate issue
-with the cruise set on the highway it will randomly kick the RPM's up

The truck has been to the dealership 3 times. First time was for a 're-flash of PCM' ($130.00). Second visit the plugs and boots were replaced and the intercooler/rad TSB was done ($380.00). Currently the have had the truck for Monday-Friday. It was supposed to be ready on the Thursday during this time period, but now they have said Monday.

I think I did enough of my homework giving them the symptoms and finding the two TSB's that address this (14-0194 and 15-0131) and documenting whatever I could to make sure it's covered under warranty. I will post what happens next week and it the problem has been solved. Fingers crossed...

Hi,
TSB 14-0194 and 15-0131 have the same symtoms and are related to the chain stretch.
Perhaps the TSB work is more complete.
My 2011 EB had the chain replaced (only) @ around 85K km,
If your truck become often in "limb mode" it should have some code showing, and if not, it should show soon..
Without any code, the dealer won't be able to do anything under warranty,
This is my taught,
Good luck!

Wrong the new TSB 15-0131 states only a noise must be present at start up after sitting. And the phasers are the culprit.

The older tsb is still active but only replaces the chain. This is done if you have certain fault codes. The newer tsb is performed if you have an audible rattle and replaces the chain and phasers.

It's dumb they have two separate tsb's but obviously there's two separate things going on here
