Although nobody could rule out your guess and it may well be correct, I tend to think that there was something else as the cause, hence Ford replacing all these parts. The percentage of trucks having this issue seems relatively small, with as many of these motors that are on the road, so it may just be the (un)luck of the draw. However the dealership was pretty certain that beyond the noise alone, it wasn't causing any sort of damage to my engine.

Who might I contact with regards to an intermittent noise in my 2011 F150 EB that is a low growling BRRrrrr for a 5 to 8 second duration when the outside temperature is -20 degrees C and driving 110 km/hr with no outside wind conditions and everything else normal on truck operation? It comes and goes off and on intermittently which is cause for concern. This problem has been evident since new, and Ford tech's can't offer solutions so an open work order has been drawn up should engine problems develop after extended warranty expires 05,2016. Please help. Thank you

Are you 4x4? My guess is you have water freezing in your IWE and the 4x4 is partially engaging. Mine did this several times...4 IWE'S later its good for now haha, til this winter I suppose. It would only do it in Winter because the ice would only allow the IWE to partially engage. In Summer it would fully engage so no noise.
Best to start a new thread as this doesn't really pertain to the noise being talked about here, but figured I would try to let you know what my growling noise was quick.

Well mine is at Ford. Will update when I hear from the Friday. Told them I'd leave it until they hear the noise. Don't want it back. Service manager believed me and I played him the video and he heard the noise.

Any Updates?
Has anybody heard any updates on the availability of parts? I had my oil changed yesterday and this morning my truck made the sound so loud that it actually startled me. They put in 5W20 instead of 5W30. I am not sure if that would make a difference but I am supposed to hear back from the Service Manager tomorrow.
I still would think that Ford Service on here could at least keep us all updated on the availability of parts but I guess that is too much too ask. So much for Ford Service!

SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. Check the vehicle build date. Was the vehicle built on or before 5/29/2015?
a. Yes - proceed to Step 2.
b. No - this procedure does not apply. Refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 303-00 for normal diagnosis.
2. Does the customer state a ticking/tapping or rattle type noise occurs from the top front cover area of the engine upon
initial cold start-up that lasts for 2-5 seconds after a cold soak of 6 or more hours?
a. Yes - proceed to Step 3.
b. No - this procedure does not apply. Refer to WSM, Section 303-00 for normal diagnosis.
3. Replace all four variable camshaft timing (VCT) units and primary timing chain. Refer to WSM, Section 303-01.
Nowhere does this say to verify the condition...I'm not sure it that would help but it's worth a shot if they "Can't replicate the problem"

I had the same issue where my dealer wanted to verify the noise. Even though I had multiple, very clear videos of the noise. I left it there all day today and went back in the afternoon, hoping it would make the noise. Of course not... It's like finally getting into a doctor appointment for back pain and everything is all the sudden feeling good, then the next day your back goes out again...
Anyway, after showing all the videos again and showing them a printout of the TSB (highlighting the same points JWL9186 did), parts are getting ordered. I will let you know what they come back with for availability of the parts. I am happy to hopefully be near getting this resolved

I would take a copy of the new tsb into your dealer and go over the questions with them...

That's great and all, but not going to help at most dealerships. This is a 15-20 hour job for most techs, and Ford's book time is 10 hours. If they can't replicate the issue, they are not going to take that kind of a hit on your word.
If they can't replicate, your best bet is to call Ford HQ and work your way up the chain.
