Has anyone tried just unplugging the solenoids and cold starting your truck? It's possible the solenoids are slow/sticking momentarily causing low flow/pressure.

EB FX4 EcoRaptor
I would be carefull using 10W40 on my EB on big pulling load.
Manufacturer recommend 5W30 for a reason. Those pistons have and need oil injection under them for their cooling. The oil injection orifices are very small and with high viscosity oil the flow may be too low, causing the pistons to run hotter under big pulling. This may tend to cause premature engine failure on the long run.
Using 10W-40 will reduce "ratting" for sure on cold start, perhaps I would stick to 5W-30 and would proceed with the worn parts replacement instead. Also hope that you are not using 10W-40 in cold winter period? Cold period with high viscosity oil need more time to properly lubrificate those turbos (and all critical internal parts). If you push the turbos to spin too early, their shaft may seize or you could dammage their ceramic bushings.

10W40 is 5 below 5W30 at that point with engine very hot 160 vs. 165 for 5W30. It is about lubrication when the motor is cold and gasoline is mixing with it that I'm getting at and 10W40 has a very long track record of protection of crank, rod bearings and wear parts of a motor used very hard and the motor is out of warranty so ford will laugh anyway. Simply put never saw a motor fall apart from 10W40 use in temperate climates and actually 100,000 miles more of life. Wouldn't use it in cold weather up northern way.

I am going to. Reading about the 5.4 it had a similar startup rattle that some narrowed down to the VCT solenoids by unplugging them on cold start...unplugged truck did not make the noises. I tried pulling the clips for a few seconds and gave up because they didn't pop right off. Just never had time to try it again yet. This weekend for sure I will try it

Think the actual rattle is the little sprocket in the valley running the same as crankshaft speed and reacting pulses between the 2 cam phaser sprockets as they are rotational camshaft torqued up by the loosened chain ? U see the same thing with the drive chain on a bike when it is loose and it eventually jumps a tooth or off the sprockets. These little guide sprockets never were a great idea with under heavy load conditions as with the HPFP there on one cam and it possibly would work better if there were a HPFP on the other cam to equal the load out. That little sprocket changes a torque difference on the gizmo forcing the chain links with pitch. OEM just won't get excited about it and it will be best for the owner to concentrate on the oils condition at all times. I get it that the 3.7L doesn't show the same characteristics and has not the HPFP on there and of course on my one 3.7L I run 5W30 Mobile one oil instead of 5w20 because the truck runs near 20,000 miles of 95 degree heat and higher street temps all summer long.

Ok figured the VCT solenoid clips out...is it OK to start the truck with them unplugged? I know 5.4 guys did it but makes me nervous. I assume it's just basically going to be stuck at a default position with them unplugged?

Got them unplugged, went for a ride. Holy crap very limited power over 3rd gear haha. I took it easy and drove about 10 miles. Hoping to be able to let it sit all night and do a start in the morning.
Biggest thing I noticed is with those unplugged...truck idled like a dream.
