Replacing the timing components addresses the symptoms and not the root cause. After your next oil change (using your current oil), track how long it takes for the rattle to consistently show up.

It rattles the next day after an oil change, and happens every day it sits for around 12 hours.

I understand the chain is a symptom, what is the root cause? Clearances increasing letting oil leak by? Caused by fuel in the oil? Or does fuel in the oil simply thin the oil enough it can leak by?

I think at least part of my issue is fuel getting into the crankcase, by the hpfp. Cause I can drain a ton of oil from my IC, and it seems my oil is overfull. I have a catch can coming but if theres a leaky hpfp I want that replaced.

HUNTRIG- i see you sold your truck. What did you end up getting.

I recently traded my Eco in for a RAM Cummins and am loving the ram. Although i do miss the agileness of the f150. I choose to get rid of the eco before i had to put a second motor in it.

Over time the oil passages are clogging/the oil pump cannot deliver the oil fast enough to the chain on startup. The problem is exasperated when the fluid is cold (viscosity and residual oil on the chain.). This is also why some of the cam caps and main bearings are showing excessive wear.

The EcoBoost is not the only engine to suffer this design flaw. You can thank CAFE requirements and the EPA.

SWIM might suggest somebody like you run SeaFoam or a motor flush in your crankcase for a few hundred km of light Hwy driving and then change your oil. Ford won't tell you this because they can't.

Actually when it was really cold this Winter(got down to -25) the problem went away. Which is why I am curious if it is thinned oil leaking past seals. The cold temps made the oil thicker so it didn't leak past? Guess it could still be a flow issue but because the oil was cold it stayed where its supposed to.

Traded it back to the dealer that sold it to me and got a new 2014 Eco that was passed the affected build dates by 4 days... We'll see how that works out. 6700 km on it now, just towed an 8000lb trailer 500km with no troubles which is why I got an Eco in the first place! So very happy with that.

I want to see a permanent fix for the timing chain before I'll keep one of these for the long haul though.

So... I heard this noise some months ago one time but never again until this past Sunday. It did the noise starting it Sunday morning and again Monday morning but when I put my camera on it today it started fine. I have a 2013 Ecoboost with 32,000 miles on it. I read through the first 30-40 pages but never really saw a solution found. Is there one? Going to record it every morning to see if it happens again.

They have a TSB to replace the timing chain. But most report the noise coming back very soon. I had the timing chain and tensioner replaced and 6000 miles later was rattling again. Today is day 6 of my truck being back at the dealer to diagnose it. They seem to think its coming from drivers side bank but they weren't certain. They said its hard to figure out because it only does it for like 2-3 seconds. Then you have to wait 12 hours for it to do it again. But it appears they are trying.

My dealer thinks its the plunger on the hpfp, or lobe on the cam that drives it. Still trying to figure out how that would make a rattle noise...but I'll let them do their thing. They are taking out the hpfp for inspection

I will report that now it's warm out, my truck is still rattling whereas it used to only do it on a cold day. I can also get a nasty rattle after the truck sits for 4 hours. Exhaust note also has a miss upon start up so things are getting really sloppy in there. This is with 40,000 miles on a replacement chain. First one failed at 75,000 miles, so based on the symptoms I'm on track to another failure. Just hope I can get there before the repair warranty runs out.

Strange I was told by my dealer that parts replaced under warranty have no warranty out of the overall 5/60 mile or 5/100 km period. Never mind... I realize you paid for the repair the first time as you were at 75k miles.
