Tuner/Programmers
I got a Jet Performance programmer as a gift and dont now much about them. I am looking for better gas mileage not necessarily power/performance. I was thinking about selling this programmer and getting a K&N. What would be the benifits of keeping this programmer?
My speedometer is off and that would be nice to even out using this programmer but what exactly do they do or will it do on my f150.
I have an 05' 5.4 FX4 with magnaflow exhaust, hi-flow cats and 34" Nitto Trail Grapplers.

I don't know about the jet programmer... but from what I read about the SCT, Edge, Hypertech and Superchips. I made the choice for SCT. I have one on my 2008 Ford Edge and my 2008 Ford F150 4X4 I am happy with the SCT. The 2008 Ford Edge has 44,000 miles on it and my truck has about 19,000 both got increased power. I detune my vehicles whenever they go to the dealer. which is every 5.000 miles for oil change. and then I re-tune. There is a big difference in the power on my two vehicles.
Also the Exhaust seemed to give me noise more than power. because I liked to hear the noise My mpg went down with just the exhaust done. which was the first thing I did to my new truck.
Next I added the lift and 35" tires. The effort to turn these big tires and push the wind my lifted truck was pushing dropped my MPG to 9 mpg and it took a lot more throttle to get those big 35" tires rolling. Note: I didn't lose power! It took more to get the truck rolling. so it felt like I lost power. next I put the CAI On and I thought maybe That I had a slight power increase but it could have all been in my head .... Still no large power increase.
Now I added the SCT X3 with custom tunes. "WOW" the truck felt like it had more power than when it was stock!!! and I was getting around 11 - 12 mpg around town. Great!
14 - 16 mpg on the freeway even better!
Now pay attention: Did I get the return on MPG for the cost of my mods?? NO!
Would I lift modify and do all the things I have done to my truck again YES!
I like it my truck drives great and is fun to drive.
My truck has more power than I expected from the SCT X3, exhaust, CAI combination. Cost for these three mods around $1300.00

Awesome, thanks for taking the time to post for me! I think it all sounds worth it to me. Would I sacrifice some MPG for a nice lift and big tires, hell ya! I think I will go ahead and hook this programmer up and see how she goes. If i can gain a slight amount of MPG increase and get some added power to help move these big 34" Grapplers why not!
So you detune everytime you take it to the dealer? You just hook it up and change back to factory settings? Also are there different options on the programmer for increase performance or just for MPG improvement? Or does it just depend on the programmer? I think all in all it will be worth it to get my speedometer leveled out again I am running 30MPH and its really only like 24MPH haha so that will be nice to fix.
again thanks for the feedback!!
Cheers
My SCT came with custom tunes for the fuels in CA 87,89,91 octane. I am able to choose which setting I want in the custom tunes and I am able to change the settings for the tires and gears that I changed without losing the custom tunes.
There are the stock settings and many other settings I can chose from if I chose not to run the custom tunes.
The custom tunes are put in by Evolution performance. they also sold me the CAI - SCT X3 combo. they had to have vin# and computer #s off my truck. They wanted to Know all the modifications done to my truck then it took about two weeks for the programmer and CAI to get to my house. there turnaround time was short after I ordered the SCT. When I had to call for info on the install Evolution talked to me on the first phone call and were patient with my questions. When I put my gears in a year later I called about how to change the gears ratio and asked if it would affect the custom tunes. The person I needed to talk e to was at lunch. He called within a couple of hours. I got my answer. these guys are good. from my personal experience.
Again I don't know anything about Your Jet Program.
When I tow my heavier trailers I set the tunes to the 89 octane. Other wise I run the 91 octane all the time.

Ok, so i have narrowed it down to either a gryphon or an edge programmer, but i cant decide from there. If its really worth getting the custom tunes I am going to have to get the gryphon because i plan on buying it through php (unless somebody has a suggestion for a different company that i could purchase an edge programmer and have it custom tuned.) I am mostly trying to get a little more MPG's out of the programmer, but if there is a performance increase i wont be too upset
I have a 2005 F150 5.4 FX4 with cat back exhaust and K&N CAI. If i could get some suggestions that would be great. thanks

You absolutely need custom tunes with the 5.4 3V and an A/M intake (you are risking running with a lean AFR).
PHP is the only supplier that writes custom tunes for the Edge platform. PHP also writes tunes for the SCT. VMP can also write custom tunes for the SCT.

so would you suggest me getting a gryphon from php or buying an edge and paying to ship it down there and then paying for the extra tune (php is running a deal right now, buy a gryphon programmer and get a custom tune for free.) How different are edge and gryphon programmers anyways? they kinda look the same..
I use www.innovativediesel.com for my SCT dealer.. Have bought 7 or 8 times from them over the years. Jeff

The MPG gain and power gain also came from re-gearing to 4.56s.. puts you back to near stock, maybe 2mpg less with the wider tires..
My mpg impovment that I wast alking about is from the custom tuned SCT, CaI that was added to my truck early on. The improved Mpg came from improved power and less work to get my truck rolling. As I see it!!
to be honest as I have said before. Most of the time around town I am in a hurry to get somehwere so my mpg's were usually around 11.2.
since I have re-geared I am having more fun driving my truck and now I seem to be around 10 mph. So it's all about my foot. LOL
