Default Retractable Side Steps...

I was thinking about adding the factory retractable side steps to my truck, but was wondering if anyone has any experience with the installation. I'm a pretty handy person, and have done a few bolt on installs in the past on previous trucks...full brush guard, soft tonneau cover, etc.

Is the installation something that the average person can tackle? Or am I better off paying someone to do it?

Thanks.

+1 for this! I installed the AMP Research steps on my 08 and did it myself, including the wiring. I am a very novice installer in my opinion, and was able to figure it all out. The install was very easy, with the wiring taking a little bit of effort and attention to detail to get correct.

I think what they are referring to as the "easy installation" is that you can order the steps two ways: Plug & Play or non-Plug & Play. With the Plug & Play, you just plug in the included wiring harness into the computer port that's under the dash (beneath the steering wheel). That method is WAY easier than the non-P&P method. However, I believe you still have to run two wires to the battery for power.

Is there wiring needed for the side steps that you add for access to the bed? Or are you guys referring to the side steps for getting into the cab of the truck?

When I purchased and installed them, there was no option to plug them in below the dash. I ran all the wires from the battery and to both sides of the truck to each step and wires them to the trigger wire for each door. It sounds very difficult, but I assure you I am no professional 😜

I also remember that AMP was making the steps. At least for the Platinum, which was the only truck that came with them factory at the time. I have not kept up with the info since I installed my own though, so I am not sure if this is still the case.

And another odd question on these steps...... What's the load rating?? Since it's possible for 2 people to be getting in or out at the same time you could have a couple 250 pound guys stepping on them at the same time!
