Are programmers worth it?

It's difficult to keep your foot out of it with a custom tune because it's soo much fun to drive, but if you baby the throttle hwy only I have seen 25mpg. Around town it's about the same or less due to the fun factor.

I also bought a custom race tune from MPT, think I paid about $60 just for that one tune.

Some reading: http://www.stage3motorsports.com/Sta...-Warranty.html
Also - IIRC, this extra coverage has never been 'tested'.
Lastly - call up some other tuning vendors ( MPT, VMP, JDM, etc) and get their perspective on the 'programmers and warranty' situation.
BTW - be prepared to datalog and return those logs for review (it's a 'value-added' service that should be part of the custom calibration purchase you made - if it isn't, you bought from the wrong vendor). And it's crucial to complete the circle that is remote mail-order custom tuning.

Keep in mind that a tune from a good tuner doesn't just boost engine performance, it also boosts transmission performance. This increases dramatically with newer vehicles. With more optimal shift points at certain throttle positions, possibly a change in redline if the engine is capable of handling it, and sometimes more positive shifting, that alone can make a huge difference.
Just make sure you have a good tuner though. You want something that is going to be worth it, but it's so easy for a bad tuner to wreck your engine and transmission. Make sure to go with someone that is very familiar with tuning your particular vehicle and set up.
