Default Not impressed with BakBox..

So today I finally got around to putting the bakbox in the bed of my truck. Mine arrived minus the velcro needed to be able to lock it in the deployed state. To Bak Ind.'s credit a quick call to their customer support line had a set of the velcro on it's way to me. They were very helpful and friendly on the phone, and I had the replacement parts in a couple days.

Anyway, I am not very happy with it. The video's made it seem like it fit further up against the cab, and that it folded up smaller then it does. The brackets are huge and while I understand that the size is needed to support the weight, it is too much space you lose in the front of the bed whether the box is folded up or not.

My biggest complaint is that with the box in place your essentially giving up aprox 1 foot of your bed, to me this is too much. The reason being is it sets on the rails of the bakflip cover to the inside of where the bolted down panel is along the very front edge of the bed by the cab. You already loose that space as that portion doesn't fold. Then the box hangs behind that.

My hope and my understanding was that with the folding cover and folding tool box, when I needed my full bed all I had to do was fold everything up and I would have full use, but that just isn't the case.

My other complaint is how the box "folds up". Two of the panels basically just pull up and then fold over the one on the back that is screwed to the side brackets. I don't know how else it could be done really but this wasn't what I was expecting.

I guess the way this was all sold on the videos and website was that it would all just fold up and out of the way, and honestly it does a pretty good job of that but not 100%. My issue is I occasionally haul an ATV around in the back of a truck, and was really sold on this system due to the fact that I thought I wouldn't have to always be removing things to haul the ATV or whatever. In the case of the BakFlip and the BakBox that is not the case. The box will for sure have to come out and the jury is still out on the bakflip, but my guess is it might have to come out also.

I know most of this is probably hard to visualize with out pictures but I didn't think to take any so I will try to take a couple over the weekend if any one is actually interested.

Mine is the same way. but the way i see it . is the space you lose is only minor to the storage. if you were to purchase any other box you would lose more than 8-10 inches. Also . with the bakflip you do lose some above the rail space in the open position. and the bakbox only adds the same amount of lost space to the "under the rail" portion.
I am 100% satisfied with my sleek hidden box that has plenty of clean storage.

I'm with BudKenny. I don't feel like I lose that much space when closed, but it does a great job of holding jumper cables, tow rope, fluids, tow stuff, etc. in a much less obtrusive way than anything else I have ever used. I like that on those rare occasions when I really do need that full width or a couple more inches, it can just lift right out of the bed altogether. I feel like they did a pretty good job on their web site of showing and demonstrating it, and it is exactly what I expected from checking into it before purchase.

I'm with Bud and Phantom.
Sorry it didnt meet your expectations. I'm completely happy with mine. While I initialy thought it would fold flat against the back of the bed I am willing to accept the small portion I loose as oposed to a full size Non-folding truck box.

I also knew what I was getting into with the 'loss of space' from the BAKFlip by reasearching it and seeing the last section that didnt fold.

Sorry Big DKC it didn't live up to your expectations. I'm glad the experience with Bak Industries was good and they got you out the replacements parts ASAP. Good sign. I also see alot of your points in regards to the concerns you mentioned. I think one of the big opportunities you have in regards to putting your ATV in the back is that the Bakbox can be completely removed from the bed like Phantom and Bud said. Although I can see that being a pain in the rear but at least its an option ya know?

Where as if you had another tool chest it more than likely wouldn't be removable and it would take up more space.

Just my thoughts!

I know this thread is a little old, but I'm chiming in anyway.

My only complaint on the BakBox is the price tag. Seems more like a $100 item at best.

Otherwise, for what it is, the storage is enough for my needs... jumper cables, basic tools, tow strap, funnels, first aid kit, snow brush, machete, AR-15, etc...

Probably shouldn't be compared to the traditional toolbox which has probably 5 times the storage capacity. I wouldn't sell it as a toolbox as much as I would a folding storage bin. But I do like it, It's high quality, it comes out easy if it's in the way, and like I said it's enough for basic needs.
