The gears in your rear differental are either 3.55 or 3.73, when you add bigger tires you will have a harder time getting those wheels turning. Simply because they weigh more and they have a larger rotational mass.
When you regear you replace the stock gears with a higher gear ratio (4.56 4.88 etc.). This helps correct for the larger tires and gives you basically a stock ratio back again.
That probably really confused you. Did it?

No, I think I get the idea. So when you have a higher gear ratio, does that mean it shifts gears at different times?

same wit mine. its poly, and its held up. also, i may have to end up regearing my truck. thinkin i blew the gears in the rear differential wit the 325s i got. im drivin a friggin Focus as a rental right now. it sux, but its got an E-brake! im puttin that damn rental through its paces now on the corners
