Lets rap,

Heres the science
1.) the 5.4L 330 has an overhead cam on top of the cylinders as apposed to pushrod(gmc, dodge, chevy) where the camshaft is in the middle near the crank with long connecting rods. This is why Chevy's with a flowmaster muffler swap are louder than an ohc f150.(theres less going on in our motors)

heres the objective
2.) you want to hear your engine more because you like your truck. If not, why bother tampering with the exhaust?

Heres the issue
3.) When and if you get a for lack of better term 'quieter' aftermarket muffler, its just gonna tease your craving for obnoxious pipes belching the size of your powerful v8 to other passenger vehicles as if they were the food.

heres the beginning of the snowball effect
4.) When and if you get tired of the $140 70 series muffler, your gonna possibly but no definitely buy a magnaflow 14inch/flowmaster american thunder* dual setup or thats gonna run you $500+- now we're at $640.

bigger snowball
5.) Its not be loud enough its like its almost there but still itching, gonna have to convert it to true duals at a cost circa $125 to cure that itch. total up to this mess ($765+-)

now a snowboulder.
6.) your at the point where your truck is noticably loud but your friends friend has that chevy with cherries so the td mags satisfy for a year but now your gonna have to out-shotgun the Chevy's pipes and expirience the race bullets! tack on $200 installed for this ammo. ($965) should have got extended mags dude.

landslide made of snowboulders and ammunition. lol
7.) the bullets will become the best setup but eventually your gonna have to try straights to say you did it and that'l cost ya 0-35 dollars.

8.) now i might be wrong but theres a chance you could spend a grand on a setup that should have only costed 400 (medium snowcone, no one gets shot)

with that being said,

? why are you "interested" in "sound ONLY!"? Why are you "not interested in any other gains." if you "want it to purr, but not be obnoxious!" and you want to "increase sound ONLY!" than maybe you should get this-

http://www.americantrucks.com/flowma...s-muffler.html

I hope this helps your approach to blowing money to increase sounds only a little with no performance gain desired and possibly spending money for no reason. If you want a good exhaust remove the muffler and have it obnoxious for a while and eventually when your tired of the loud drone but satisfied with your trucks *****, tack on a $40 pepboys flowmaster 40 or cherrybomb turbo muffler at a researched and pre thought out muffler shop and then youll be happy and satisfied i promise. Compared to straights everything else eccept $1000 true-dual-aeroflow-mbrp-banks super monster stainless titanium banna double dual 5inchtips will be loud enough. but I respect your opinion greatly and hope this helps you.

All that to tell him he should get a $40 Flowmaster or Cherrybomb? He wants to improve the sound of his truck without it being obnoxious. A muffler delete would definitely fall into the obnoxious category... Why are you assuming he is going to want louder and louder when he doesn't want super loud to begin with?

because thats what kinda sorta happened to me. I started out wanting a not "obnoxious" sounding exhaust and I have spent well over 1000 on my rig. I started with a nice Magnaflow si/so 14" and end up with a full 3inch race straight pipe. Go figure. Just providing introspect for the fella wanting to buy a muffle Thats all, oh yeah nice truck dude.

that kinda happened to me.
I put headers on my truck so I changed my bullet 33" cat back system to the Magnaflow si/so and hated it. I got it wty for a magnaflow 3" cat back which was too quite. so after the shop did the wty on the magnaflow so tot he 3" cat back. I still wasn't happy.
I went back to the Bullet cat back. I now have and extra 1000 in mine. and I ended up putting the Bullet system from the cat back that I took off at the time of hte header install.

What a waste. of money and time.

all that to end up where I started.

I have the Borla Turbo XL single in/dual out running out the back with 4inch tips that are "hidden" I'm very happy with the tone and I can hear it when i want to and it gets quiet at cruising speed. I can still hear it while going through the gears in city driving but I don't think it is annoying. I did have turn downs before the rear axle and it was terrible! I liked the clean look of no tail pipes but hated the noise. So, i ran them out the back but stole the hidden design from someone else.

Hope this helps.
