Are K&N Cold Air Intakes junk?
Hi im a new member here and I own a 08 5.4 f150. I went to Yahoo answers to ask if K&N made good cold air intakes because I was wanting to install one on my truck. The people the BLASTED K&N. They said that K&N cold air intakes are nothing but junk and would ruin my engine. Is this true?

I cant anwser that I dont have a K&N set up I built mine, but I will tell you it is really worth it, the intake systems from the factory suck. I feel like I picked up 15-20 hp.

I have a K@N CAI and I love it but I guess it depends on who you ask. Like 02flaresidesport said, it is really worth it because almost any intake brand you get will be a lot better than stock.

Well really you have to ask yourself do you want to spend over $250 for a cold air that gives you 15hp. To me its not worth it for a stock motor. Yea if you have heads cam intake and other crap then yea you want to suck alot more air. First thing I would do just buy the filter $50 or so the cold air not worth it. Then go get you some mufflers or a chip burnt for you or something like that. You'll get alot more hp out of a chip or a tuner then you will a cold air!

I know that I'm a new member here as I just got my truck this past saturday, however I am not new to working on cars as I have made several mods to my BMW. I agree with everyone about wanting to get the performance aspects from having a CAI put in your engine. However most of the estimated gains that companies claim to give are not always accurate as you have to go get your vehicle tuned to use the new additional airflow you are receiving. You also don't need to have extensive engine work done to be able to see some of the gains from a CAI. One of the major gains from installing a CAI is that you do get improved MPG even before a tune, due to the fact of the increased amount of air being supplied to the engine. Yes a CAI is def a great coupling to having headers and cams being upgraded but you are still able to see some results after just slapping one on your engine.

I have been to a bunch of dyno days and the trucks with the AF1 made the most power over k&n, volant and s&b I had a 77 serries on my truck for about 30 miles then I took it off and sold it, that thing was so loud.

The thing that you have to remember with aftermarket intakes is that they all use similar manufacturing processes. IE the tubes are either mandrel bent (aluminum, steel, or stainless steel), and the plastic tubes are usally injection molded. The heat shields are generally fabricated from sheet metal that bolt together, and the kits with boxes are plastic molded pieces. The main difference is the type of filter used. Most manufacturers use multiple layers of cotton guaze with wire outer mesh. Each one claims to have a special feature that others don't, (to make theirs better). The best thing I have found that works in these situations is to check around in the area that your from to see what works best with the least amount of problems and complaints from actual users of the product. Hope that this will help out.
