GPS - Garmin, a tablet, or just use my phone?

I went with a Garmin with lifetime maps and traffic. While a phone shows you trouble spots for traffic the Garmin gives you alternate routes and shows you how much time you will save depending on the severity of the traffic jam. Exit services like gas or food is coming up at the next exit are handy too. I really like it. I use a sandbag type base mount for the dash and do put it out of site when parking most of the time.

^Can't beat google maps on my Note 3. Have mine mounted on the dash. Listen to Tunein radio app , and can even see notifications run across the top of my phone as well as a constant mph readout. Don't miss factory navigation and I can take it with me anywhere.

I'm looking for a phone or tablet mount that will place the tablet in front of the traction control button in the picture above. I rarely have to use that button so it would not be a problem.
- High enough to see the stereo,
- low enough not to block too much windshield and
- closer at hand than a tablet in the tray.

I was a trucker for 4 years garmin goes crazy after about a year or if it gets hot by the sun but its all in a manor of what you want to spend when I got tired of buying GPS after GPS I spent a lil on a Rand McNally 7" with all the goodies including lifetime maps ( eBay about 2 to 250$) and any truck stop ( 250 to 350 ) check it out I've had mine for 3 years and have loged 360,000 mi with it and its still going strong and you can make calls through it teather your phones internet to it

simplest and best way is using waze, which is running on google maps but with a better interface on a phone or tablet. my garmin has 150,000 miles on it and is pretty reliable. the new models with real time traffic are pretty choice. the one problem with a phone gps is coverage... i live in philly and only drive the tri state area. if you are in the middle of the country or up north imagine there are gaps in coverage

I have issues...
iTrader: (1)
I installed a Nexus 7 (2013) tablet in my dash. I tether to my phone for data. It works great. I made it so it snaps in and out pretty easy, so I can remove it when I need to. No wires at all. Wireless charging behind the dash.
My only complaint with the Sync system is that every time I get into my truck I have to use the voice command and say "Bluetooth Audio".
Nexus 7 install
Front camera on tablet.

I bought an ExoGeat CD Mount and use Waze or Google Maps on my Note Edge. It's perfectly angled and sits where the light doesn't interfere with my night vision.

Garmin leaves something to be desired. Got one from Costco and within two weeks it was shutting off automatically after about 15 minutes worth of use and wouldn't turn back on. No big deal - I was only driving in North America's fourth largest city...
I also find it annoying to have to take it down whenever I park. You're right to say that it's just inviting a break in if you don't conceal it.

Garmin 2597LMT Overhead
I mounted this yesterday and was surprised to see that the Garmin 2597 just snapped in place without major modification. I drilled 1 hole in the plastic for the cord, ran it down to the fuse box (like the earlier post).
I have lost 'traffic' for now because of the power cord/antenna being out of site, but im sure I can either mount the cord differently or pay the $19.99 for Live Traffic.
