Cold Air Intake; waste of money? Short Vid

I have an '11 Lariat Supercrew with the 6.2. A few months after I got her I bought a Volant cold air intake kit for it. When It came in, I opened up the box for a look at it. The Airbox had a wide open "Slat" of a hole in the side of it, Huh?? It was on the side of the airbox along the fender, and it ran from the coolant reservoir to the front, then completely around the front of it to the other corner. And it was about 2" wide. But it did have a nice smooth intake tube. Well, I put it on anyway. It made for a lot of noise under the hood that's for sure. But I also was noticing a slight vibration when I got down on her. I really didn't notice any performance increase, and in fact, after about a month of running it, I noticed my gas mileage dropped off. After another few weeks I decided to pull the thing off. I did like the intake tube thou. So I left it on the truck, and I took the stock airbox and cut an opening in the bottom of it to let more air in. I put it back in along with the snorkel. Vibration was gone and my gas mileage came back and even increased a bit. As for performance, who knows? Sounds good thou, Lol.........

Nope....... As long as I'm on the move, the air intake temp is about the same as outside ambient temp, sometimes a bit lower. In the summer if it's 85 deg, intake is about 85 deg. In the winter it's funny to see the temp so low. One day last year on a trip out to West Virginia, the outside temp was really cold, like 12 deg. Intake was at like 9 deg. At idle of course it goes up. But once I'm back on the move it quickly drops back down. Here are a couple examples.
Sorry I don't have a pic. I just left the Volant tube and attached it to the stock airbox with the rubber boot it came with.

How did you cut the stock air box? I was thinking of attaching a tube to the stock port somehow and run it along the fender and towards the front of the bumper.
But then again, my bumper flows a ton of air into the hood so it may be a waste of time.

How do you explain the numerous "cold air" intakes that actually sit in the engine bay that aren't using any fender tubing? Many cars actually has no room at all. The F150 has lots of space for air exchanges and cooling in my opinion. When it's stopped at a light, etc. any vehicle won't be benefitting from the benefits of "cold air"...
Also, I have an off-road bumper that has a winch hole that has much more airflow than stock and a raptoid grill that is very open as well. Actually much of the fender has been cut to fit the bumper on that side.

I took a hacksaw, Lol...and cut about 1/2 of the bottom clean off of it. With the lid off you can see clean to the ground. I just cut it flush. I started at the rear edge and worked my way to the center, then cut across to both sides. So if you remove the lid, and look down inside of it from the top, the bottom is missing from the center to the rear. It mounts as before, and I left the snorkel in place that goes thru the fender well. So it still picks up there as well. I'll go out later and take some picks....

Sorry, haven't had a chance to pop the hood for a few pics. Thought I'd go to the Volant site for a pic of the intake tube. Looks like the airbox has been updated from what I had. It doesn't have that gapping hole in it's side as before. But it does have what looks like a port. Probably to add a duct? maybe leading from under the truck? Anyway I photoshopped the pic to show what I had. You can see the intake tube and it appears to be the same. I'll go out today if I have a moment for a pic of mine with the intake tube and stock box.
