I ran a pre-filter on my Jeep before and it seemed to really help with big particles and kept the filter from getting "as wet," but IMHO you should always go for a closed box design whenever you can because a K&N filter may keep a good portion of dry dust particles out, but if it gets splashed with muddy water, the muddy water will go rght through it. I know that for a fact. Just be concious of where you are mudding and take water holes SLOW.

I guess I could always get a box from another company...I want my CAI to be as tough as my stocker. but F 400 bucks for it.
on summit CAI costs 211 for it all (summit brand)
perf. peddler 239 for K&N.

wonder how much just a box would cost from somewhere else...

I was thinking of taking .125" aluminum and make a box with a buckle top lid. Unsure about doing it though I don't want to choke the air from the filter.... Although it would just pull more air through and be colder right? Anybody got any thoughts?

you could make it...but it would be kinda hard and might be more cost and time worthy to order a box premade

Where would be a good place to buy a box to go around a CAI filter?

Open filters will suck in water and mud. It will get the whole inside of the intake tube dirty and I've had standing water/mud mix right before the throttle body... don't go plowing through deep puddles..........

The boxes arn't really going to make the air that much colder, it might keep water out but it might also choke it from breathing and be nothing better than a stock intake.. just my opinion.

I might look at 1 of those covers for the filter but only run it when mudding or offroading but take it off for normal driving would be ideal. Alot of the dirt roads here if I cruise with someone else and they are infront my filter is clogged with dirt to the point it can barely breathe.
