I have a 2006 Lariat and was thinking between a volant or k&n. i like the volant because of the enclosed filter.

If you have the 5.4L you will need a custom tune to compensate for the intake. The Volant as been known to melt under high temperatures, and it probably gets pretty hot down there in Louisiana. Search for the Gott's mod: it uses your stock intake but removes most of the restriction and there is no need to reflash the PCM.

The 04-06 5.4L were the worst for the lean condition. The 07-08's are hit or miss on the CAI effect, it depends on the PCM strategy. A wideband O2 would need to be used to determine if it is lean or not. A custom tune ensures that you won't have problems, plus custom tunes just make it more fun to drive.

Ok so with any CAI I would need a custom tune with my 5.4. Except the gotts mod that doesn't need one?

The companies know about the problem with these trucks but because it's not a huge part of their sales and they don't want to admit/put a disclaimer on their product. Many people also put an intake on, get a lean condition, and then search for a problem never thinking the intake could cause it.
The only thing I don't like about most CAI (like the Bank's) is the oiled filter. Oiled filters have less filtration efficiency and have been known to foul the MAF with the excess oil. Oiled filters are around 98.3% efficient, while dry filters are 99.5% or better. If you don't want the Gott's and want a CAI look, I would go with an S&B with a dry filter. Basically the same design as Banks but no worries about the oil.
