Default Bed Storage Options? On a Budget

I know this topic has been explored extensively in one way or another. Being budget conscious and believing I can "repurpose" a wide range of things to be used for other applications, I was considering using steel ammo cans that I can bolt to my truck box along the sides of the bed in line with the wheel wells. Has anyone tried this approach or something like it?
I have the 5.5' bed and space is a premium. I don't want to spend hundreds on a "pork chop" or cross box, or tonneau cover.
Just wanted to see what some of you guys have done? I plan on just carrying tow/recovery straps, trail tools, and some other misc items.
Thank you in advance for your time!

Watch for a deal on a used tool box. The tool box I got was 10 years old, but nothing wrong with it. Got it for $50.

I have a tool box, but it takes up what little room there is in the bed. Hence looking for something compact. I looked at the swing case and want something not plastic. Guess I'll have to keep looking. Thank you guys for your input. Much appreciated.

Why not make your own swing box out of the ammo boxes? Seems easy enough. Get a nice quality hinge and play around with mounting them. I bought a few of the cheap cloth tool bags and have 1 set up with straps and jumper cables and another has hand tools. I have them under the rear seats so they are out of the weather and the bed. They are easy to grab and go or move to the bed if I need the floor space.

I'll probably do that. I'll explore some of the swing case designs, as well as other cargo solutions. I'll post pics with what I come up with. I know the swing case, pork chop box, and some of the interior storage solutions are very expensive for what they are (usually simple construction or cheap materials).

Another good thing is to set up the rear seats to fold down. There is a lot of useful space back there. You might be able to just store everything back there.

The rear seat backs fold down? My truck lacked the owners manual when I purchased it. So I will have to look into that. Thank you!

It's not really supposed to other than for service. There are a couple pins you can push to fold them down. I drilled a hole thru the pin, put a ring from a key ring on them, put a zip tie in them to give you a pull tab more less. I then made a couple small wood pieces to create a tray to contain it all.

Check out DeeZee Wheel Well Tool Box and Weatherguard Aluminum Pork Chop Tool Box however they don't swing.
