2000 f150 4.6 v8
 

Hello, I just bought a 2000 F150 4x2 Ext Cab with the 4.6 V8.
I have a pro lawn mowing business,and I currently tow a 5x8 utility trailer,along with a zero turn mower (1,100 lbs) , ,and other small equipment weighing another 150 lbs.

I don't want to spend a whole lot of money,but I'm considering some basic mods in hopes of gaining a little more pulling power from 0 to 35 mph.

1 - Replacing stock muffler with a flowmaster muffler?
2 - K&N air filter?
3- Hotter spark plug wires,and spark plugs?

Your thoughts,suggestions,opinions,etc?

1. Replacing the muffler wont do much, and according to what I have read FlowMasters can cause you to LOSE power. If you want it for sound then go ahead with a muffler swap but id suggest pretty much anything other than FlowMaster.

2. The factory air filter flows more air than the engine can take in and filters much better than the K&N POS.

3. Plugs aren't going to gain you anything and your truck doesn't have plug wires.

I would suggest a good tune up if you got plenty miles on the clock. This will help replenish the power the truck has lost due to things getting dirty and or worn out.

Personally if I were you I would:
*Change Oil & Filter
*Change Tranny Fluid & Filter
*Change Plugs(MotorCraft Plugs ONLY & Gapped Correctly!) Just be careful you motor only had 4 threads holding the spark plug in so make sure you torque the new plugs correctly!
*Change FRONT 02 Sensors
*Clean MAF Sensor
*Clean Throttle Body

If you still find it lacking there is only 4 things I would suggest that's worth it other than a supercharge or cracking into the engine.

Remove Clutch Fan & Install Electric Fans
Custom SCT Tune
Shift Kit In The Tranny Along With A Bigger Cooler
Swapping Rearend Gears

None of which are cheap but the only real performance gaining mods you can do to that engine.

Flowmaster does extensive testing at our full-time Research & Development facility with a Super Flow engine dyno, 4-wheel drive chassis dyno, race teams, engine builders, etc. for developing mufflers and exhaust systems. Sound is subjective and everyone has their own preference in terms of what they want their truck to sound like. The best thing that you can do is research. Call each manufacturer of the products that you’re interested in and make sure that you're getting the right information for products based on your specific wants and needs. IMO gear swap and tune would be your best bets. Probably looking at ~$2000 depending on where you go and if you're doing the swap yourself.

K&N WILL give you more power, tired of seeing posts saying it won't. As a matter of fact, it's GUARANTEED to give more power.

Barely... 13.12 HP @ 4562rpm is not what I'd call "more power" even if it does satisfy the "guarantee"

well then people can't make the claim "the factory filter flows more air than the engine can use". That's malarkey..

Use the Gotts mod, build your own CAI that actually pulls cold air from the wheel well and not the engine bay, use the saved at least $250 to put toward a good tuner which will make use of the Gotts... far better investment for the gain

the aFe CAI retains the factory lower half of the airbox, you are drawing air from the same location. They just increase the airbox size, increase the filter size dramatically and increase the diameter in the piping as well as get rid of all of the flow inhibiting flexible tubing and resonation chambers in the factory system.

Unless you increase the diameter of the piping where the MAF mounts though, a retune is NOT required. The MAF is still measuring and compensating for the same volume of air. With that said, a CAI that REQUIRES a retune will yield better gains, but I am unable to find one for the 4.6.

Would be interested in knowing if anyone else has.
