How do they know? Ford has said that they'd build as many as they could sell, so wouldn't that mean that dealers would have to be able to order more?

Initial allocation will be a combination of '14 info and best guess - it's all they have to go on.

However, because it is no longer limited production, allocation will change (evolve if you will) based on demand. Dealers that push them out the door will get more. Dumb ****s that try to bog it to their customers will get one and sit on it. That's the price for being stupid.

This is probably far from you, but I know that Pruitt Ford in Burkburnett, Texas was allocated eight. They have sold three to date. They are, to the best of my knowledge, selling at MSRP. Good Luck. God Bless.

So, basically, they don't actually know how many they could get over the course of the model year.

The number they know will be close though. If they know they are getting, let's say 10, ford won't just give them 50 later in the year

Default Allocation

Find the biggest volume dealer that's close, The highest allocation will go to the dealer's that sell the most vehicle's.

Plus the more vehicle's a dealer sell's the better chance you have of finding what you like an get a good deal.

Say my local dealer is getting 5 allocations. Are they already built trucks or will I be able to build mine?

Allocation is what the dealer will get. Has nothing to do with orders.

Edit:

It can impact up, meaning their allocation can go up if they are selling more through orders but if they sell their allocation and no orders it won't reduce their allocation.

Allocation is a predetermined number set aside for a dealer. You can order as many as you want.
