Default 2016 Platinum to 2018 Raptor

So I recently traded in my 2016 Platinum for a 2018 802a loaded Raptor. Now I had a the Platinum for almost 2 years so I knew it well. Here are some random thoughts after 500 miles on the Raptor.

Seats. Ok so we know the Platinum seats are not comfortable because of the massaging hardware in them. Well that's not the case with the Raptor. Much more comfortable. Also oh yes they get ice cold!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Not sure what Ford did but the cooled seats and seat back included gets nice and cold nice and quick. Happy for that.

Transmission. Not a fan. I will reserve final judgement for another thousand miles but here are some initial thoughts. It seems to gear hunt. 10 speeds is way too many. I though my 6 speed was fine. 8 would be max I would say. 10 is just dumb. I am thinking this 10 speed sucks. It has been clunky a few times, gear hunting and power delivery sometimes seems to surge or come and go. Not sure if that is the engine or the transmission but again so far the tranny looks to be the biggest loser.

Auto start stop. That is BS and is going away as soon as I can get the Fordscan thing on it. I can't stand this crap.


Stereo. New B&O stereo system. Gonna have to say if it's better than the Sony it isn't by much. It may be a smudge better but nothing to write home about as far. That being said they are/were both excellent factory sound systems but the folks saying the B&O is way better are way out to lunch. Better? Maybe. By enough to make a real difference? Not to me.


Engine noise. This thing sound like a ricer and is driving me nuts. On my Platty it had that fake engine noise which I thought was awesome. A lot of people don't like it. Not me I thought it was great and wish we had a way to turn it up a tad. Well the Raptor doesn't seem to have the fake noise probably because the exhaust is so loud it may not be able to overcome it without it sounding weird.

Speed. With only 500 miles on it I haven't gave it hell yet. But just laying into it it doesn't really seem any fater than my Platinum despite having 90hp and 90 more ft pounds of tq. But is is an offroad truck on 33's so there is that.

Another cool feature is when you push the voice button it will automatically turn the AC fan down so the chick can here what I'm saying.

I went from a 2015 Lariat to the Raptor and I have to say I really miss my Lariat.
- My 2015 seemed effortless when accelerating. I hate the transmission. Almost seems like it needs to work harder to find the right gear and accelerate.
- Sound, I turned off the fake engine noise and really no difference.
- the Auto Start Stop feature in the summer really sucks... its hot in the car and I need the AC running.
- It definitely turns heads more then the Lariat but I traded in my 2014 Shelby for this so, oh well.


It is what it is.. once I take it off road it might bring the smile back on my face...

Have you compared transmission behavior when it's in Sport mode? I would expect it to hold gears longer and do far less hunting, but no direct experience. Or even Baja mode??

I also wonder if Sport or Baja mode deactivates stop/start? Works that way in some other vehicles I've had.

Here's a blurb on the different modes... I'd love to hear your impressions specifically on transmission behavior after experimenting with them a bit...

Also, I know my 2011 Eco Screw really changes it's transmission behavior as it 'learns' my driving style. I drive it pretty aggressively, and it starts shifting crisper after a while. After a reset, it's a bit funky and unpleasant for a while until it re-learns.


Let’s explore the new driving modes offered by the Ford Raptor’s terrain management system.

The first, and perhaps most traditional, mode is aptly called Normal mode. Though it’s not explicitly stated, this is the driving mode that most drivers will use in standard driving conditions. This mode allows the truck to behave like a standard F-150, as opposed to the unbelievable monster it really is.

When drivers want to feel like they’re in a Mustang, there’s Sport mode. When engaged, the steering gets slightly heavier, and the Raptor increases its throttle response so that the pick-up can shift gears more quickly, as well as hold gears longer. This provides the driver with full power at each step. This driving mode is best suited for well paved, winding roads. Just be prepared for your knuckles to go white while driving.

The final “normal” driving mode, best used in slippery conditions, is Weather mode. Regardless of whether there is rain, snow, or even just a bit of moisture, Weather mode keeps your wheels firmly on the ground. When enabled, the system automatically engages 4WD Auto, reducing the AdvanceTrac electronic stability control system, while throttle response and shift schedule are optimized on the fly to provide maximum grip.

For more extreme conditions, the 2017 Ford Raptor has Mud/Sand mode, which automatically engages 4 High, as well as the electronic locking differential. Meanwhile, AdvanceTrac kicks in and to keep you firmly planted on the ground, despite less-than-firm conditions. Even power steering is adjusted to provide the driver with maximum steering assistance without detracting from the thrill of powering through road conditions that would paralyze a lesser pick-up.

When going for a more traditional off-road adventure, the Raptor’s Rock Crawl mode becomes much more appealing. When the going gets tough, switch to this driving mode, which drops the vehicle in 4 Low and automatically engages the electronic locking differential and sets AdvanceTrac to its least intrusive settings. At the same time, Rock Crawl mode automatically optimizes transmission response and throttle modulation to provide greater control. The coolest feature of this mode isn’t just that it glues the truck to the road surface—it also engages the Front camera system to allow drivers to see what is right in front of them at speeds up to 15 mph.

Finally, there’s Baja mode. This mode is built exclusively for fun. It dials down traction and stability control settings but improves the engine’s response time and speeds up the transmission shift times. It makes for an absolutely terrifying, but thrilling, off-road driving experience. This is the Raptor’s least intrusive driving mode overall, as it engages 4 High only. Baja mode is as terrifying as it is given it’s named after the Baja 1000 Desert Race, which had previously been used to test trucks.

I haven't had time to read the owners manual yet but just playing with it a bit here is a little insight.

Sport mode is about the same as it was on my Platty. Yes it will hold gears longer etc but this isn't the mode you want to drive around in unless you are trying to go fast etc as it's annoying under normal driving conditions.

When you switch to those other modes it will automatically set traction control, 4wd mode, diff lock, and steering mode. So for example if you hit baja mode it automatically puts it into 4H or 4A (I forget).

1 day later and I am still not pumped on the tranny.

As the other guy said I sorta miss my Platinum. This thing is a bad ***** off road truck as a street truck my Platty was better (as you would expect)

The main reason I bought it was for the power. This HO motor in a Platinum is what I would really want with my old 6 speed transmission.

Mine took about 1000 miles and then really smoothed out. Not sure how long it takes to "learn"

Yea I have around 600 miles on it now and it seems good. Now I don't notice the transmission at all. So it has smoothed out.

So I came from a Porsche Macan Turbo, not a pickup, to the Raptor. Never even drove, except one short test drive a year ago in a platinum, a pickup before.

Respectfully, out to lunch is how I’d describe your jumping to conclusions prematurely on the tranny.

The Porsche PDK 7 speed dual clutch tranny is probably the best tranny in any vehicle. If you’ve never test driven it, do it. I’ll bet my first born you will fall in love.

Having experienced it for 3 years and 3 Porsches, I feel I’ve experienced the best and therefore can make an intelligent statement on the Raptor 10 speed.

Put in sport mode and it holds gears, going down hill with curves it will automatically downshift to help hold speed. I drove it on Rt. 129 in August, a/k/a The Dragon, in NC/TN. It was amazingly good.

6,000 mile round trip drive to Utah in August, that 10 speed on the highway returned 17 mpg at over 80 mph which is the speed limit in Utah.

It doesn’t hunt for gears at all. What it does is carefully skip gears. It will start in 1st as you casually accelerate from a stop to 3rd, to 5th, just like it’s designed to do.

My only complaint is an occasional rough up shift when stepping on it hard.

Also, driving in sport can go unnoticed at times once up to speed on backroads. Only a glance down will show it in 6th instead of 8, 9 or 10.

Mine is a 2017 so has the Sony. I can say it’s better than the Bose in the Porsche.

Seats are good but not as good, especially the short bottom cushion and the glaring inability to move the lumbar up and down.
