Default 2nd Gen Pinging Like Crazy Under WOT/87 Octane

Hey guys-

Long time lurker/occasional poster. Recently traded in my 2.7 Lariat for an Oxford White 802a SCrew and am absolutely loving it.

However this past weekend it was a little warmer than usual and I had my stereo down as my daughter was sleeping. Long story short I was merging onto the Highway and noticed the truck was pinging/detonating its ***** off in Sport Mode and under full throttle. I obviously got out of it and have been rather 'soft' with the throttle until I can get some 93 octane in this tank.

Which leads me to my next point/question. I know these trucks can run on 87 octane without issue according to Ford, obviously 93 would be better but that's a different discussion. Has anyone else experienced any pinging/detonating with their second gen and 87?

I'm hopeful its just a 'bad' tank of gas but it was certainly concerning. I'd rather not have to put 93 octane in it all the time when I don't plan doing anything crazy but if the truck is detonating like that under 'normal' conditions than I'll consider it. Thanks in advance guys, feedback is certainly appreciated!

Just so we're clear, this is NOT a Raptor?

Huh?

2nd Gen, 802a, 'Raptor Forum'- sorry I thought this was clear enough for most Raptor owners out there.

Yes...the vehicle in question, is in fact, a 2nd gen Ford F-150 Raptor.

Whatever ford states, I would never run reg unleaded in a turbocharged raptor with the amount of boost and power they put out. Whats it gonna cost ya, an extra 5-6 bucks a fill-up and also use top tier rated gas not some billy joe bob gas station=cheapest.

I hear ya- and believe me I know the 'importance' of good fuel, as I have a 700HP+ Mustang on E85. I just figured if this truck was calibrated for all octanes, why waste the money on 93 when I'm primarily using the truck as a daily/occasional fun haver.

Unfortunately with the way fuel prices are and the 36 gallon tank, its more like 20-30 bucks more a fill up. Not the end of the world but that's beer money...lol.

It is actually more like $18 per tank to run 93 octane over 87 octane.

I agree, and that's what I acknowledged in my original post. I just wonder if these things are on the edge of detonating using 87, why not require something higher?

Oh well, 93 from now on for this owner I suppose...

I'm kinda surprised at this. Even engines that "require" 93 octane will run fine on 87. Timing would be adjusted by the knock sensor within reason to avoid detonation.

Mine ran fine on 87. I swapped over to 93 because I was expecting tunes be available by now and I didn't want to have a bunch of 87 in my tank when I got my 93 tune. That was several tanks ago....still running 93 and still waiting on tunes.
