Default 2018 Lariat to 2018 Raptor? Talk me in or out of it

Hey Guys,

Just looking for a little input here. Let me start by saying, I've always wanted a Raptor. They are just plain badass. I should have just bought one to begin with, but my wife wasn't on board at the time. I know only keeping my truck for a year and trading it in I would take a big hit, so I'm here asking if I should scratch that itch or not...

My current situation: I have a 2018 Lariat with 16K miles on it. And I added about $5k in wheels/tires/shocks/Bakflip/etc. I looked up the current trade in value and it is about what I owe. So I realize I would be taking about at $16K hit (not including mods). I could keep all my mods minus the Fox shocks and put them on the Raptor, so at least I wouldn't lose out too much there.

So really my question is, will my 2018 Lariat depreciate so much more than a 2018 Raptor to offset that $16k hit over say 5 years? I think if the difference in depreciation offset me to about a $6k hit I would be more than happy to trade it in. Especially since I will be a lot happier driving it.

Here is another thing to factor in- If I keep the Lariat, I will most likely be installing new gears, towing mirrors, and airbags, so that would be another ~$4500 in mods that I wouldn't buy if I got a Raptor.

Your input is appreciated!

It really doesn’t matter what anybody’s opinion is on here, because you are the one that needs to decide. Trading a new truck in on another new truck isn’t a $ issue, because you will take a hit. It’s about how bad do you either want or need it. Typically want versus need. You want it or you wouldn’t be talking about it, so just do it. You won’t regret it.

What options from a raptor is it that you want? If its the outside looks theres fiberglass companies that sell conversion kits so the outside looks like a raptor. If its the suspension, theres also long travel suspension you can buy that can easily beat a raptor. I myself would just modify the current truck. But if you dont want to go through the hassle of buying and installing all that stuff, go for the raptor.

Another option would sell the current truck, buy an older f150 rebuild the engine and install the body conversion kit, put a decent long travel kit. And boom you got a raptor.

Fiberwerx has a pretty nice kit. Its a little expensive, but if its just the looks youre after.

No more mods on the current, at 40K trade it in. You WANT a Raptor regardless if you NEED it so get it.

If you keep the Lariat you plan to add tow mirrors and airbags. Leads me to think that you plan to tow heavy with it? The Raptor is not a great tow rig. Your Lariat is far better suited to towing.

I just came from a 2017 F350 Platinum and I have never been happier with a truck choice. Picked mine up about 3 weeks ago and its been a blast to drive. I would say go for it.

I’m in the same boat. I’m trying to decide on whether to get a raptor or get a lariat/limited and put on a raptor grill and some fender flares. The raptor is everything I want in fun and looks. But I tow a camper and the towing on the raptor isn’t good and the mpg’s aren’t good. But man the raptor looks so good.

If you want a Raptor, get one. You can throw everything and the kitchen sink at your F-150 (and you’ll have an AWESOME truck, no doubt), but it won’t be the Raptor that you really want. Life’s short. If you can afford it, go for it.

I loved our Gen 1 (2013) and Gen 2 (2018) shop trucks.
