Issue: Is your F-150’s engine idling loudly?

The eight cylinder engines are notorious for this due to the cam phasers. For the unaware, cam phasers are responsible for adjusting the camshaft position to improve fuel injection into the cylinders, which leads to better fuel efficiency when idling and the ability to draw power from the engine more quickly. However, after anywhere from 60,000-100,000 miles, they also cause rough, loud idling due to wear and tear.

While the cause can typically be linked to the cam phasers, solutions to the problem vary widely. Some of the top recommendations include:

  • While the noise is annoying, the cam phaser itself isn’t actually breaking. If you can live with it, your F-150 will be fine.
  • If the truck is under warranty, bring it to the dealership.
  • It’s possible they may need to either replace the cam phasers, or even the cam phasers and camshaft as well.
  • Install a coil spring behind each cam phaser to reduce the rattle as it moves.
  • Swap the cam phasers from a larger engine so that it sits more tightly, reducing the rattle.

Read the full thread to find out which of these solutions is best for your truck.

Some real good info here. Brand new to the F150 scene, I just picked mine up two days ago. I looked at the post and saw cam phaser and had no idea what it was. Now I think I've got it. Thanks for the info!

WOW!! What an informative thread. I KNEW I was in the right forum when I registered here. Thanks guys, y'all are a wealth of information!!

COHF13, I don't think you can do anything about it. From what I have read and from having downloaded the Ford Service Bulletin, "TSB 06-19-8", it affects 2004-2005 5.4 V-8s.....and maybe a few 2006

Anyway, my '05 4X4 Lariat SCrew with 82K miles just started doing it. Being ignorant to what it was, I ran to my local Ford house and a very nice (and pretty) service adviser educated me to the problem.

Lucky for me I have an extended warranty and will be worked on next week.

Google The TSB I posted. You should be able to find it in a "pdf" file and save it for future reference....hope this helps

I've read that if u get a pair off drive gears off of a V10 they don't have the phasers.

Where did you read this? Link maybe? I have looked into this also. Comp cams makes a plate to bolt to the back of the phaser and Livernois Motorsports make a limiter and a lock. Kinda amazing Ford has not fixed this issue.

I wish I could find it again as I've seen countless articles on VVT arguements. I've wanted to move up to swapping in a 3v into my 2v truck. I could be wrong since Livernois motorsports says just using a lockout. If locking out is so ez as swapping in a differnt drive gear from a different engine it would be said. It seems that when switching to an aftermarket cam the stock VVT drive gear is not upto the task.

Jspec,
Maybe they have. From what I read in the FORD Service bulletin, the cam phaser problem is centered around 2004-2005 F150/Expeditions with the 5.4L engine...they might be a few 2006 stragglers out there from what the Ford house service adviser told me a while back but that is all I have of being affected. What do the 2007-and up have that the others don't? Or is it that these 07-and up don't have the miles yet to cause this problem...

So they make noise, but are they damaging to the engine or just annoying? So how bad is the repair? Pulling valve covers and cams or just valve covers? Looking to buy used F150 that sounds like this and the price is too good. Should this be a deal breaker?

Watch video #17. You don't have to remove cams, but very good info on phasers.

Hey i'm new to F-150 Forum and just wanted to know is it hard in your opinion to fix cam phraser because i think my 2004 f-150 has that problem. When i press on the gas between 1000rpm and 1500rpm theres a ratling noise like if the motor has no oil.
