cam phaser help
I have a 04 with the 5.4 3v and it spounds like a deisel at around 1000 rpms and quiets down with more speed. Has anyone attempted to fix this yourself, there is a limiter spring for sale for this, I want to do the repair myself, am I crazy? need to save some dough

There is lots of info: search Cam Phaser, engine nioses and VCT. I had the same noises like you but mine got louder with rpms. After researching the noise I ended up change the Cam Phaser. I did the cam phaser on the passenger size, it was easy. There are good instruction on the net. Google DIY Cam Phaser and it will take you to another f150 forum with great step by step instruction and photos. You'll need a timing chain wedge from ford to do the job, it's about 80 to 150 bucks depending on the dealer you order from. Mine was $89 and the Cam Phaser was $240. It took me 5hrs start to finish. I got rid of some of the noise but it was'nt my only problem. Unfortunately for me I was also hit with the lash adjuster (lifters) going bad as well, took it to the dealer for that issue, starting at $756 to replace the passenger side. Don't wait to long to find out whats going on and check the the TSB's. I have a 04 SC 5.4l FYI, good luck!

I did a google search about the cam phaser and I think I am getting some mixed up info? Some say it's just noise and won't damage the engine and some are saying to get the issue fixed? My truck doesn't sound like a desel but sounds like a little knock at idle speed.

It's up to you, can you hear the noise in your cab? The best thing you could do is get it check out, and if it's nothing, no harm no foul.

Ok thanks for the knowledge I can hear the knock sound in the cab when the stereo is off but luckily I have the factory subs so I always listen to my music loud. The noise doesn't bother me. Love this truck.

Just came back from the dealer and the machanic a ford showed me the true source of my tapping. My number 3 roller rocker or what what ever the want to call it siezed. In effect it turned itself in to a grind stone and started to chew through the lobe on my cam. Just jump from 700's to 1300 and some change, so if you hear a noise get it check.:cen sored:

Got my truck back today The mechanic told me that the motor is all good but the cats a making a little noise on the first startup. Which isn't a big deal because they are covered by the emission warranty. Just glad to have my truck back
