1997 4.6 Spark Knock Issue
#12
Unfortunately, I never found the fix. After taking it to two shops and dropping about $350 with no results, I decided to just start running 91 or 93 octane fuel. My truck will not ping on 91 or 93, and since I only drive about 5,000 miles a year, the extra price for the better fuel isn't going to hurt too bad.
I always wanted to replace the knock sensor under the intake manifold, but never could justify going to the trouble when the truck isn't throwing any codes.

knock
I have a super chips tuner on mine. Set for 87 octane but I run 89. My knock has gone away after that tube was replaced. I put between 3-4 k miles a year on my truck. Only has about 82k on it.
I would check the vacuum tubes. First one would be the one that goes to the back of the intake on the passenger side.next would be the sample tubes that come off the exhaust manifold on the driver side.

The sample tubes go to the DPFE sensor. After thinking back, I did change it also. I bought one at advance auto but it was a POS. I went to the ford dealer and coughed up the cash for one from there.
Talked to the service manager there. He was no help and almost a total jerk. After I bought one, a mechanic stopped me in the parking lot and said I was on the right track and they go bad often.
Happy to help
