are headers worth it
I have a bone stock 92 f150 with the 4.9 300 inline 6 and want to do a mod of some kind to the engine thats fairly cheap and means i dont have to rip a good running motor to pieces for a cam or something. So i was thinking about headers but they come with a price tag, i found cheaper ones on clifford performance for 389 bucks and was curious of what gains i would see in power or sound if any.

The header is supposed to give a gain of 22%, which if it does what it says thats around 30-32 horsepower but i dont see how that is possible from just one part on a stock engine especially an efi. I heard that the exhaust and air intakes ae very restrictive so i am eliminating the air box and made my own cold air intake for around 50 bucks and a header would be nice to add sound and power if it does what it says and its the cheapest i could find its 389$ from clifford, while hooker and hedman want around 500-600 dollars for a header to fit a 92 300 6 and some dont have the street hook up for the 02 censor. Anyone with any info at all is welcome to give a suggestion.

the only thing headers will do for you is make it sound better it wont be a really noticeable difference in power because you will still have to have the cats and a muffler for smog unless you dont need that where you are which if thats the case the headers may be worth it. and i would put flowmaster 40 series muffler and a cold air intake would be the way to go.

Collector Need and Sizing:
This might help you make the decision:

A header will do more than improve the sound; a properly designed application will return a significant if not awe-inspiring amount of power.

another thing you can do that i did is to make a pipe with the cats on it to where you can just bolt it on for smog then have a strait pipe to bolt back in and to the muffler after you smog it. just somethin i thought of one day and works good and i know several people that do it now too

Im gonna try that pipe idea you came up with and that means the header will have full free flow to the tip and with a straight pipe did you notice any difference in power or anything?
