..ive got an 02 and a 08 f150 xl 4.2s......... cannot beat them with a stick... mine both have hauled a 1 ton chevy with 8 inchs of lift and 42inch tsl's... and a s10 blazer on a 3/4 chevy frame on 39.5 boggers... halled them there whole life on a 18foot car trailor... i love both my 4.2s however my 02 has 3.55 gears and is a shortbed flareside... vs..08 longbed with 3.73s and the 02 will spank the 08 hands down...

both of my 4.2s are auto... .... alot of people dont think the 4.2s are very peppy but i think they are there is a big difference in the power of the 4.2...ive easily pulled over 10000lbs with my 02 and auto....
my buddy had a 99 4.2 5speed... it was quick as hell really...but he had almost everything imaginable to do to one.... but we tried to pull my boat with it one day... and i thought it was going to rip it apart.... the autos are way better i think

the biggest problem mine had was picking up speed when moving...i could want to pass someone on the highway and downshift to fourth and peg it and it would hardly move...are the autos ok with this? im just tryin to sort out if i find a 5sp cheap to just get it or look for an auto....would rather have an auto if they are a little quicker...not bc i was a fast truck but i want it to be tolerable on highway...

ya... if you kick either of my 02 or 08 in the *** .. it will get after it pretty hard... .. my 02 will pin you back pretty hard ... but its got CAI and tuned... with 3.55's.. if it had the 3.73s like my 08 it would be pretty damn wicked....

My old 4.9L six w/stick, 3.08 gears, 4WD and a cap would get 17-18mpg in summer and 14-15mpg in winter...back when they sold us gas and not brew. On highway trips with a moderate load and using cruise, it'd get 21mpg if I kept it around 70mph.
Then ethanol came along...subtract about 1.5mpg. Then a new set of fairly aggressive tires...subtract another 1.5mpg. Got so the best I'd see in normal driving was around 15 mpg...even if I drove like granny.

I tend to drive most in the city (stop and go) and for me it's fine. Granted I'm not out to race the next guy who comes up next to me. I love my truck! It gets up and go just fine for me...but I'm also not a young one (20 something) who needs to stay up with the crowd to make myself feel better. I guess it's all what you consider a priority! ...also gas mileage is pretty damn good for my v6. No complaints here!

I have a 2007 4.2 ...actually just got it about 2 months ago. I used to have a 2000 V8 Tundra and I'm pleased with the better gas milage I'm getting with my 150. I would say I'm getting about 17 mpg in the (stop and go ) city driving.

thats good, that what i get but mixed driving. i would say 75 % highway 25 city. but mine is an 02 v6 manual with 3 lift and 285/75/16 and a bull bar that probly weighs a ton so I think its doing ok.
