Engine smoking...might be oil caked on?
1988 Ford F150 4.9 300 6 cyl engine. I just replaced the alternator, and drove it. I got a high pitched sqeaking noise (the belt) so I tightened that, and cranked it up in my driveway. now theres no squeaking, but I've got smoke coming up from around my power steering fluid resivoir. there is oil and coolant caked on top the resivoir. could this be the smoke and harmless?

Did you check the tensioner. These things can freeze up and because they are plastic they will smoke when the belt slides on it. The fact the belt was loose tells me the tensioner just might be bad. Serpentine belts are designed to work with lower tension then the old V belts and the smoking could be an over tensioned belt,
It could also be a bad bearing in the power steering pump that is semi-seized and over heating.
