Adding a limited slip to my 3.31 open?
on a 2016 f150 2wd 2.7ecoboost
gonnah keep the gears. 90% of my driving is on the interstate. but the open diff is not gonnah work. not on this light ass truck with its aluminum bed. not living in the mountains where i almost get stuck making a downhill u-turn. im looking at lsd options and have decided to go with auburn hp for 8.8 31 spline 1. will this fit? 2. have there been any detailed install writeups? (searched for over an hour) 3. should i go with the positrac oem lsd? its 200$ less im hoping i can do this. i installed new shocks/springs/shackles/intake on this truck already. |
Been looking into this too. For for track use but daily improvement too.

I've heard of at least one place that has done the swap from Mustang to F150 but no more details besides its been done. No word on how easy and what extra parts.

did you ever find a LSD option? i'm trying to hunt down something for my 3.15 2WD...
|
It's not a completely open diff, has somewhat of a limited slip with the traction control cause when I do brake stands both my wheels spin n not jus one lol

Ford beefed up the pinion on the newer 8.8's, but I didn't think they changed the carrier bearings or axles. If I were you I would start comparing part numbers on the bearings between the older & newer 8.8's.If the carrier bearings have the same ID, and the axles are 31 spline, there's no reason you couldn't drop a TruTrac in there.

Interesting - they did beef it up.
I wonder how long for the aftermarket to catch up. |

heres a picture of the side by side comparison, super 8.8 vs standard 8.8 big difference and the axles themselves are beefier too https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.f15...b7c944bb7a.jpg
Just trying to understand which model/options we're comparing here. What years? Standard open or e-locker version? |

So the "Super 8.8" is what is standard in the 2015+ F150's now?

Standard open or e-locker version? yes if you have a 2015 and newer you have the super 8.8, others call it 8.8HD but it is called the super 8.8 by ford. Same diff as the mustang from 2015 n up just not independent. Im pretty sure the locker can be in either the super 8.8 or the 9.75. 2014 and below if it has an 8.8 differential it is the standard 31 spline they've used for a long time. I had to research this a **** ton when I put 4:09 gears in my truck. Even called ford racing tech support and they confirmed. |

Old thread, but I'll throw in my $..02 anyway. I had an auburn installed in my Explorer (8.8, 31 spline, not "super" 8.8) and it worked really well. Not a locker, of course, but it had a lot higher breakaway torque rating than the stock limited slip that Ford offered at the time. I was pleased with its behavior.

Tru-Trac & don't look back.
