1990 F150 Rebuild
We have a 1990 F150 with a 4.9 I6 and AOD automatic tranny. It has 148K miles on the original engine with no major work done. What would be a good starting point for rebuilding it?

the head...
it needs opens up for performance...
if you can fit a header to it then you can run a cam with a higher LSA and get more power...the head is a weak point in the whole engine

Ok, thanks. I don''t think I'll be looking at too much for performance, just want it to run good and smoothly

Is there a problem with the motor?
A 4.9 should be able to go a lot farther than 148k miles before needing a rebuild.
Every case is different, but if you are lacking power, perhaps the problem lies elsewhere. Keep in mind that these motors only had a 150 hp new and these are full size trucks. Are you getting excessive blow-by?
Unfortunately the 4.9's really don't have much out there in the way of power add ons. The easiest power gains are to be had with some pipes and some porting.

Fords have a weak oiling system... even my truck with only 80,000 miles has a main rattle...got 104,000 on it now and it isnt getting any worse yet but it is still there...
