Will These MPG Mods Work?
#21
No longer stuck in 2003
Honestly for the amount of money you'd spend doing all those mods and not saving anything you'd be better off dropping the money into a smaller car. That being said most of the things you can do to help your gas mileage have been mentioned.
1. Drive slower, going 85mph is fun but not the most fuel efficient. Most likely around 65mph will be the most economical
2. I missed if you've done this but general maintenance (plugs/coils, oil, o2 sensors, etc)
3. Let off that gas pedal dammit
4. Look at some of the hyper-miling strategies, it won't double your MPG but if you are at a stop light that takes 10 minutes, turning your engine off will save you a little bit of gas. This can add up to about .25-.5 mpg over a tank of gas maybe, on a good day, when the stars are in the right position. Keep in mind though the more insane strategies probably will get you in a wreck.
5. Choose more efficient routes. If you are living in an apartment, driving to campus, driving back to the apartment and doing so multiple times, find somewhere to hang out on campus (assuming you are in college but the theory applies elsewhere.)
6. The most efficient route is not always the shortest. For example if I take one of the streets across the city it's 13.6 miles between my house and work, if I take the interstate I run 15.3ish. Going the street route regularly gives me about 13.5 mpg, going the interstate gives me 15+ usually (rush hour excepted.)
7. Three right turns might equal a left but that may not save you much in the long run.
8. Lose some weight, the more crap you carry in the truck the more fuel you expend carrying that crap around.
You are driving a 5000lb brick of aluminium and steel, not a 1500lb sports car.
