Aint no hate here, I really like them. Reminds me of the Ranger I had, a little rounded and classy. They have great lines.
Are they smaller than the current model?

based on my setup Scab 4x4 6.5' bed, our gen trucks are only about 6" shorter in length but other than that they are very very close. but the '09+ is slightly large. main thing is the 12th gens FEEL much larger. or atleast to me they do

I have never heard anyone hating, just voicing preferences. Everyone has a right to their opinion. All generations of Ford pickups have good and bad points. I think ours has the sexiest lines of any generation, but before 03 the 5.4 has some issues with the plugs blowing out.

Not to start an argument, but statements like "I find it hard to even look at them" or "makes me want to puke", that my fellow Ford lover is not just voicing a preference that's hating. And those are only two examples of what I've seen and heard.

As far as the "official" crash tests go, as a firefighter I saw many, many crashes involving this generation of truck. The other vehicles were in far more worse shape.

Just FYI, hitting a concrete barrier at high speed is gonna do damage, a lot. If hit at high way speeds directly head on its usually fatal, regardless of the car's safety rating.

Will the 97-03 fair better than a smaller car? Of coarse but I wont put my family in one.

It's weird, I'm searching for all of these negative crash test results and all I can find is that video. Everything else gives the truck an 8 - 8.5 rating.
