Why am I keeping this truck???
#11
My wife and I are DINKS (duel income, no kids). She drives a new Cadillac I paid cash for this past December (program car $20k under MSRP with 4,500 miles on it (I won't buy brand new)) and I primarily drive my company car. We have no credit card debt, no loans outside of our mortgage which one of us can handle if needed and yet I keep my 16 year old F150 for no other reason than it does the job and still looks new. Tows the boat, the snowmobiles and the trash to the dump. Four wheel drive, power windows and AC is all I need in a truck so why tie up ten's of thousands of DEPRECIATING dollars in a new ride when all these need is a couple hundred bucks a year to keep on the road? So your old girl had a bad day...it happens. In fact it happens to new trucks too like my brothers newer expensive 5.0 F150 with lifters that now sound like a diesel at startup. Imagine making payments on that....ouch.
Do the math and when the math swings in favor of a new truck then buy a new truck. When making the choice between an ac compressor vs. 12 months of payments on a shiny new truck I'll choose option 1 every time. I'd like to think that those types of decisions are why I'm in the financial position I'm grateful to find myself in. Ignore your brother, it's your wallet not his.

Wife has a new Ram crew cab 1/2 ton. Price on it?? Free as in Company truck so they pay for tires, Gas, Everything other then $600. per year insurance we pay. It's what we use when we go on Vacation and no Camper going with us.
So like you can't see buyhing a $40 to 60,000 dollar truck to beat up and have no use for.
Last new Pickup I bought, was a 2004 Chevy 2500HD. Reason I bought new, was less then $5000. between new and used. Wanted a F250 but the new engine that year. Scared me and glad I did not buy one. Ran that Chevy for 10 years. Sold it for $11,000 less then I paid new. Hauled a Truck camper across the country with it. But again I had a good use for it.
If I had been able to find a good used 7.3 back then. I would have owned one. But most were trashed or the owners were not selling them.
So as you have posted I drive the 99 model for the same reason as you.

I agree with you on this also. I bought the 99 model to have something to pull the boat with. Could I buy a new truck? Yes and looked at a few, but can't see paying that kind of money. When its something I don't need that bad. We have less then 3 years, and the truck will only get driven every few months. As we start traveling across country and seeing all we can see. Bought a Used 3 times $120,000. 5th wheel camper for less then half price. Paid cash for it. Bought the Chevy Kodiak the same way. Cash and it was my only ride for 2 years.

Just pulled her out of the garage and hooked up the boat for tomorrow's 200 mile journey for some fun on the lake. 16 years old, still sharp looking IMO and still getting the job done!

Glad to hear I'm not the only one who has the means but isn't drinking the $50,000 for a loaded truck coolaid I still have the sticker for my 2000 Lariat, loaded up (for the year) $28k. I know these new trucks are nice but I still cannot see the value in paying that kind of money.

Just a title update:
My A/C is up and running again, cost just under $300 bucks.
I looked into a new truck, had the support of my wife but at 1200 down and 630 a month to take advantage of 0% finance rate for the truck I want I said screw that.
I'm gonna take that 1200 bucks and go on vacation, and 630 monthly payment ismore than the cost of repairs I incurred from my run of bad luck..... so on a good day the new truck will cost more than my old truck on one of its few bad days!!!
Case closed... I know why I keep it now.
Its cuse it makes scence 😎

Probably the most sensible post I've seen in a while. I see people make sacrifices to squeeze in a huge monthly vehicle payment into their "budget" only to regret it soon after the "new" wears off. Hell, I refuse to finance a vehicle even at $100 a month. I'd rather spend the money on home improvement and keep what I can in the bank
