Where Did The Oil Go??
I went to change the oil in my 2000 Ford F150 Lariat (5.4L) and was shocked when less than a quart drained out of the pan. Where did over five quarts of oil go?! I looked everywhere for leaks and could find no signs, nor are there any puddles or spots in the driveway. There were no warning lights, knocking, or over heating that would indicate an almost complete loss of oil. My teenage son drives the truck and he claims that the oil pressure gauge read normal (but I cannot confirm that). I read that one possible cause might be that synthetic oil has a higher consumption rate than conventional oil (whether I used full synthetic or a blend in my previous oil change I do not recall) but I think I would see the telltale oil smoke in the exhaust if it is burning that much oil. Any thoughts on this mystery?

Two possible causes.... it leaked, or burned. Look on the passenger side back of the motor, right where the trans bolts to the block. That is a very common leak point on these trucks. My Expedition does not leak on the ground, but it does leak from there and cause me to add oil over time.

Here's my Expedition. This is only a couple hundred miles after the trans was rebuilt, so it shows you how the back is. Due to a bad casting process, the head has a bur on it which will cause a leak.
