Installing oil pump locks up crank. What am I doing wrong
I'm in the middle of doing my timing chains. I have a new Melling m176 pump. It's the correct one for my truck according to rockauto.
I took the pump apart and put assembly lube all over everything on the inside. None of the gears looked like they went a certain way. Put it back together.
Timing chains are off. Cams are locked down. With oil pump not installed I can rotate the crank back and forth from 11 to 12 o' clock positions using the balancer.
I put the pump on with the key way at 12 o' clock. Put the guides on. Went to lay the chain but wanted to turn the crank back to 11 for correct timing. Now the crank will not turn with the oil pump installed. Pulled it all back apart.
Crank will turn until I put the oil pump on. I've had that pump apart 10 times. I just don't see what I'm doing wrong. Does the gears have to be a certain way. Seems like if it will bolt on it should be right.

With JUST the oil pump on, it does not turn? Or after you have it all back together?

Moot point now. I got it....
I told myself I would take the oil pump apart one more time. Then if that didn't fix it I was just going to cry,,,lol.
Then I noticed a little tiny groove around the edge of the gears on one side only. So hey. lets flip them over.
I don't know if that's what it was or not. But it went on just a tiny bit further than before. Might have just got lucky.
Just finished putting the chain on and called it a night.
