Default What is this in transmission pan?

Hello all,

Although I've done lots of reading on the forum, this is my first post. I do most of the work on my truck myself, but I'm no mechanic by trade, just a pretty handy type of guy.

I've been having some rough shift, and a slip when coasting around 40mph, so I decided to change the fluid in the trans and torque converter before doing anything else. Well, I found this in my transmission pan and can't figure out what it is. It's plastic and about an inch long. Does anybody know what it is? I'm hoping that it's a clip to secure the filter.

Please help! Thanks in advance!

Might be the dipstick tube plug but from what I've read they're normally yellow.

Question: I got the truck with 235k miles on it and the stealership did a trans service on it last March. I've got 258k miles on it now. Do you think that that piece should have fallen out before now?

It is not a plug. It looks more like a clip for a wire loom.

It's a clip that holds the solenoid wiring to the side of the inside case. It goes where the wires run in the group to the solenoids, it holds the wiring from swinging around and pulling loose. Is it important? I would think that if Ford put it in to hold the wires, that probably I'd put it back. If you've already resealed the transmission though, I doubt if I would worry about it now. If not, yes, put it back in, and be done with it. It may not cause you any problems, but why look for things to happen. JMO.

Thanks a lot everybody. Last question, I hope - since I've already replaced the pan, should I take it down and install that clip? It looks as though I'd have to take down the solenoid. And if so, is there anything involved with removing the solenoid other than unscrewing the star bolts?
