Im in the proccess of fixing the leaky window in my 2003 F150 super

3/8, 5/16, 1/4 etc. Should I use a primer, if so what one?

Clean it up real good, use some alcohol to wipe it then install 3/8 butyl for the rear window. If you have a slider, check the top by the area where the glass opens. If you see a crack there, fix it before you reinstall. If you don't it will leak, guaranteed.

Thanks Akd.
No sign of a crack. I will look again in the morning. So the butyl. I see that one can buy 3/8 x 3/8 and 3/8 x 1/4. the guy at autozone thought 3/8 x 3/8 would be the correct widith but to thick, NAPA said 3/8 but only had 5/16 x 5/16 which would be to thin and that I needed primer to make the butyl stick.
I only want to do this repair once.

3M number 08612 is what I use. You can get it at AZone/OReilly's, any good automotive paint supplier, etc.

71S....also, when you install the ribbon on the window, make sure you follow the design on the frame when you lay down the butyl. If you don't follow the lines, you will definitely get a leak, so make sure you follow it completely.

AK, if I'm not mistaken, you need 2 boxes of the 08162, right?

Also, what do you use to fix the crack if it is cracked?

(Side note: just sent my 3M rep at work an email about getting some of the tape through him)

Thanks for the replys thus far. Any input about using primer with the tape?
Any thoughts on how tight to make the nuts on the studs?

You can use pinchweld primer, but in my research, it is not necessary to be used with this butyl tape/ribbon sealer. What is necessary is a clean surface.

Thanks for all the help.
I just left the local glass instillation shop. They sold me a roll of foam center butyl tape seal (works better than solid core) told to finish wipe with foaming glass cleaner (leaves no film) and tighten to just past snug. (do not over tighten).

What did he sell you, exactly? Do you have a part number? Brand?
