If in fact this discussion is regarding the Evaporative Emission Control System Purge Control Valve (which I believe it is), it has nothing to do with the EGR system.

If you use a K&N or similar type filter, or you have a dirty stock style air filter, the MAF is most likely dirty as hell and will throw the P0171/P0174 lean codes or P0172/P0175 rich codes. Clean it with MAF cleaner and blow dry it and reinstall. Reset your computer codes and go from there. I was running into this with my new engine recently and it was the MAF.
