Any oil up to 10w-40 will work fine. Use climate as your guide. Also, if you are crawling along off-road...thicker may be better due to decreased cooling.
otoh, 5w-20 is ideal for hwy and short trip driving, esp in winter, when the oil starts really thick and may not heat enough to thin down to normal +100c operating temp, where the visc on the bottle is measured. So, with the thick grades you end up running excessively thick oil...killing cold starts and mpg.
Don't scoff at 5w-20 as a poor choice all around. It's only a hair thinner than 5w-30 at op temp, but a decent amount thinner at cold start to make a difference.
5w-30 or 10w-30 is fine in summer. Try Rotella T5 10w-30 Semi-Syn. That's a once a year oil that's cheap.
Motorcraft is an excellent Conoco product, they have many. Their Kendall with titanium additives is the latest tech. Castrol Edge has it too. Brands are not really important, some use very similar additives....there are really only a few formulas offered by a handful of additive companies.
Quakerstate may be the sleeper of the SOPUS line, which includes the awesome PZ product. Don't bother with synth unless you want to go at least 8k on the oil, 5k on dino will do everyone fine. I go a flat 6months on good oil and change visc for the seasons...Halloween and May Day.
I'm not afraid to go 10k on oils like German Syntec 0w-30 or Mobil 1 0w-40 (now in cheap jugs at WalMart!!!) Also Mobil 1 High Miles is KILLER, lots of Boron and other crazy high additive levels. Stick with the 5w-30 there, the 10w-30 is much thicker, like a Euro 30 weight. Remember, it's the HiMiles line that's wanted. The reg Mobil 1 line is meh. I'd just assume use a good dino.
I like the $15/5q Mobil Clean line. I run the Hi-Miles version in my Porsche (10w-40 + 10w-30), 9q at a time. The lighter grades of Clean Hi-Miles would be great for the Essex engine, maybe my 1st choice. (it's really a synth)
Avoid off-brands....

eh the 5.4 and the 4.6L are similar engines...I use Castrol GTX 10W30 in my truck, then again, just got it, however with the old F150 I was driving with the 4.2...still the same, and the filter...usually NAPA Gold, worked fine.
