what to look for in a 6.0 thinkin of trading my 2003 for 2003 powerstroke

A cold air intake and/or a chip can cause a check engine light to come on, but you wont know exactly until you pull the code. Being as this truck is a 2003 first year production for 6.0s its a handful of problems, along with being chipped its been pushed beyond its OEM operating limitations sending it to repair land faster. It also has 160K on it so I'm sure most of the problems have been repaired. But it all depends, some engines never quit breaking and some engines have had barely any work done to them and still going strong. A few questions I'd ask is what repairs have been done to the truck since ownership. Common failures on 6.0s include; EGR coolers, oil coolers, injectors, head gaskets(repaired with head studs, not weak torque to yield bolts), internal leakage in the high pressure oil system due to a weak fitting on the high pressure oil pump(or 'dummy plugs' in the oil rails) causing hot engine crank no starts(updated fitting which uses a snap-to-connect fitting, the HPOP has to be removed located under turbo under a cover in the engine valley), fuel injection control module failure causing no starts, coolant degas bottle cracks, random coolant leaks(common coolant leaks from radiator, egr cooler adapter tube, a big donut o-ring in between the front engine cover to intake manifold), oil leaks from rear main seals occasionally, mainly from oil pans and bed plates which engine has to be removed, some turbo replacements as well. I think I've listed all the commons. Ask a lot of questions and let us know what he said. Good luck.

Only if you haul a lot as well. The 6.0's like being worked and upon shut off the turbo doesn't finish its spool, it stops when the truck does so it needs to be ran hard other wise the domino effect happens from the turbo veins.

Ok guys I got serious question. I'm lookin at a different truck because that guy was being stupid. Well I found a 2003 f250 fx4 but has the 7.3!!! lariat crew. Slick truck he says runs and drive great never no problem changes oil every 6k and fuel filter every other oil change. Has brand new tires and really nice wheels has 230k has four inch lift kit. What do you guys think? He wants $2500 difference. Mine has 170k

Save a minimum of $5,000, get bigger injectors, turbo and a CUSTOM tuned chip. Not some cheap crap hand held programmer. Check out Total Diesel Performance, Tony Wildman is one of the better tuners for a 7.3 and I had his tunes on my 02 F250. Ran awesome

You can either leave it alone, and let it be a good truck to you. It's a diesel, so it'll have a lot of power, just don't expect it to be a race car. Or you can tune it leaving it mechanically bone stock, and cut it's life in half as you don't have the money into it to keep up with the power you're trying to get out of it. Or you can totally chase the white rabbit, and throw thousands into it. And hopefully it has the power you want when you're done.
Just leave it stock.
