Motorcraft FL820S and 5W20 motorcraft semi synthetic, there's no reason to run anything else, and anyone who tells you different probably has one piece projector headlights to.

Short answer:
Nothing wrong with Fram filters. Go ahead and use it.

Long story (mostly fact, but a little opinion):

Fram does not use cardboard. Never have. Only ignorant people continue to spread this misinformation.
They use a fiber material, similar to the filter media (if it is good enough for the filter media, why is not not good enough for the end caps?). The glue used bonds better to the fiber end caps and media than metal to media.
20+ years ago Fram had some issues. They have been addressed. Use Fram with confidence.
If you want one of the best, the Fram Ultra is a tank of a filter. Synthetic media, wire backing, silicone ADV, 99.9% efficiency @ 20 microns. It is one of the best out there for price and performance.
The Fram ToughGuard is the step below the Ultra, uses synthetic blended media, fiber endcaps, silicone ADV, 99% efficiency @ 20 microns.
The Extragard also has a blended media, nitrile ADV (but silicone ADV is being phased in), fiber endcaps, but a 95% efficiency @ 20 microns.

Motorcraft filters are made by Purolator, and many of the 820s filters have torn during regular use.
This is one example of many torn Motorcraft filters.
There are a bunch of other examples of Purolator made filters with tearing media in other sizes as well (most all tear on either side of the metal seam where the pleats are very wide), and also there have been issues with the ADV being cut but the base plate holes.
Purolator made filters are not a filter I would use on any vehicle (Except for maybe the Boss Synthetic or Bosch Distance +, those seem to have better construction). Motorcraft used to be great filters, but in the past 5 or so years, problems have come up and they seem to just ignore them. I have sent several e-mails to them with pictures of torn media from filters I have had, and never a response. Similar story from many others on BITOG. They just ignore it.

Wix filters are always a great option. NAPA Gold is the same filter as the Wix filter.
Wix also makes the NAPA Pro-Select, Wix Pro-Tech, Walmart Supertech, and O'Reilly Microgard. These are a lower end/jobber filters. The size that fits our truck (at least the 5.4/4.6) uses what is called a combo valve. Not something I am crazy about, but I am sure it works.
I have cut a few open (here and here), and it is a decent filter to use for a 5000 mile oil change.

Champion Labs makes a bunch of filters for other companies, and most are pretty decent. The STP line from Autozone are champ made, and the STP XL is a really good filter, but is the same price (if not more) than a Fram Ultra (which is a better filter).
They make Mobil 1 Filters as well. They are a synthetic blended media, but at a premium price.
I cut one of the new "Annual" ones open, and was not impressed.
Royal Purple and AMSoil are the same filter (also made by Champ labs), the Royal Purple just has a purple ADV. Synthetic media, wire backing, silicone ADV. Good fitlers, but costly.

K&N used to be Champ made, but is now outsourced overseas. It is also a blended media filter with mediocre performance for a premium price.

As for what I use, well, my truck has a EcoGard Filter on it now. Never heard of EcoGard, well, not many have.
It is a jobber filter, but Walmart and Amazon started selling them to the public for cheap (Like less than $2).
I almost did not use it after cutting the first one open, but decided to give it a try anyway since I complained to the company, and they responded to me quickly, and even sent me some replacement filters for the bad one.

I sadly know more about oil filters than I should. Most will use whatever they grab off the shelf and not think twice about it, and never have a filter problem.

Reason I was asking is because I've come to realize they arnt all the same and you get what you pay for. (More detailed) last night I found a 6 pack order of Fram Xg2 for $25 comes to about $4.50 each on eBay. My local Walmart sells them for $8.47 each.

I have used Fram more times than not on two of my vehicles. One I bought new. It has 208k miles. The other I bought used with 65k. It now has 130k. Never had a problem.

I agree with 99% of what Blu says on these filters, but no way in HELLO would I use an orange can FRAM for anything. Other than that, I'm good. I used to rep Fram, Autolite, Wagner (same company (Allied) at the time) and we had all kinds of Orange can Fram problems. This is one I wouldn't use on your car, so that says something.

I agree, with this ebay find, I'm able to upgrade them to the XG2 and get some good protection at a cheap cost. The orange cans sell for the same price locally. I've got 221k and hearing a tiny bit of my tensioners so I'm looking for good protection.

Yes, those e-bay XG finds can be good. Just make sure you check each filter for dents and such. Most sellers will either credit you if it is damaged or send a new one.

Also, sometimes when you order the XG filters, you get some FSP filters instead. These are the Jobber Fram synthetic filters, same internals, they just don't have the grippy stuff on the end, internally they are the same.
