My 02 years ago wouldn't go into 4x4 if I was sitting still so I sprayed it with some wd40 and never had an issue again.

Now twice a year I spray the actuator on my screw with a good lubricant spray and 4x4 always engages at a dead stop even with the back tires buried.
Or just use it more often

It's good to lubricate it regardless of how much it gets used.

My buddy claimed his 06 f150 had 20k on his grapplers, they were about 70% tread. In his defense,he nearly slows to a complete stop to turn, never guns it and rotates them like clockwork. I wish I could control my urge to spin tires lol.
